Crypto exchange HTX is back up and running after a DDoS attack saw the site overloaded for an estimated 15 minutes Friday morning, HTX advisor Justin Sun announced Friday.

“All services of Htxcom have been restored,” Sun wrote in an early morning post on X. "Thank you for your concern and support! All funds are SAFU!”

Known as a distributed denial-of-service attack (DDoS), the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Agency notes such an attack “is accomplished by flooding the targeted host or network with traffic until the target cannot respond or simply crashes, preventing access for legitimate users.”

Denial-of-service attacks “can cost an organization both time and money while their resources and services are inaccessible.”

News of Friday morning’s attack comes just months after HTX and its sister exchange, Poloniex, experienced a hacking attempt that drained a total of over $200 million from the exchanges.

“Since we have already covered all of the loss of tokens in the platform, on HTX and Poloniex, 100% of assets are 100% safe,“ Sun told crypto news platform, CoinDesk, in a December 2023 interview.

“Even though in terms of exchanges itself, we need to basically earn those profits in the future. But for customer assets, it’s 100% safe.”“The recent outflow represents a small fraction of our total reserves, and HTX remains in stable, healthy operation,” an HTX spokesperson told CoinDesk at the time." 2024-01-19 18:02:07 ‘$3.5m Nursing Care Fund Crypto Thief’ Extradited to South Korea

South Korean law enforcers have extradited a man suspected of stealing $3.5 million from a nursing care fund to buy cryptoassets before fleeing abroad. The man, surnamed Choi (aged 46), is a former National Health Insurance Corporation middle manager.

He was arrested in the Philippines earlier this month after a manhunt that lasted for around a year and a half. Investigators said they were now “focusing on recovering” the fund Choi allegedly stole from a public fund for nursing care.

Hankyoreh reported that police were “tracking the whereabouts” of the money that was allegedly “stolen” between April and September 2022. Police think Choi converted the fiat he stole to crypto, and was living “a life of luxury” in a “high-end” resort in the Philippines.

Choi reportedly headed the firm’s financial management team and oversaw nursing car benefits payments. Open / Comment

The South Korean government says it will “completely re-examine” the “need” to tax crypto traders on their earnings. As things stand, traders are set to be taxed on their earnings from January 2025.

But per News1, the government will “review” its stance on the taxation of crypto trading profits. This follows a recent decision to do away with taxes on gold investment.

The government wants to spark growth in the investment markets. But it could also revisit previous promises to revitalize the crypto industry.

At a press briefing, Jeong Jeong-hoon, the head of the Tax Department at the Ministry of Strategy and Finance, was asked if the government was still planning to go ahead with the launch of capital gains tax for crypto holders. Jeong replied:

“Cryptoasset taxation is also a matter that should be discussed in the National Assembly, after the abolition of gold investment tax.”

Crypto traders have complained that it is unfair that they should pay tax on their investments while gold traders are untaxed. The government is likely to respond to “public opinion” on this matter, the media outlet reported. Open / Comment

South Korean regulators seek to introduce new laws that would sanction the use of cryptocurrency mixers in the country to curb the rate of illicit financial activities. According to local news outlets, the Financial Intelligence Unit is considering rolling out new regulations similar to those of the United States for digital asset mixing services.

The reasons given for the incoming regulations are due to abuse of the service from bad actors engaging in money laundering and other illegal services. Officials from the agency say this is a growing concern because there is currently no law to sanction the activities of mixers in the country.

As a result, the financial watchdog revealed that the need to restrict and cover transactions by coin mixers is being discussed, adding that talks began in South Korea when the United States took action against digital assets mixing services.

Per the report, mixers have limited authorities from tracing stolen funds of several hackers as they move them around on exchange without the platforms being able to flag them. Open / Comment

A group of Republican lawmakers from the US House Financial Services Committee has urged Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Chairman Gary Gensler to address inquiries concerning the hack of the agency’s X account on January 9, 2024.

In a press release on January 10, the committee stated that it had dispatched a letter to the SEC demanding a comprehensive briefing to be provided by January 17, 2024.

The inquiry stemmed from a tweet posted on the SEC X account on January 9, falsely claiming the approval and listing of Bitcoin ETFs on all registered national securities exchanges.

The misleading post gained widespread traction on business news websites, Bloomberg TV, and various social media platforms until Chairman Gensler clarified that the agency’s account had been compromised.

The committee’s letter stressed the critical connection between the SEC’s ability to fulfill its mission, which includes investor protection, fair and efficient markets, capital formation, and effective communication with market participants. Open / Comment
