Testing More Ways to Control What You See on Instagram

Today
, we’re announcing that we’re testing two new ways to help you shape your Instagram experience. And we’re sharing a list of controls and methods that you can use to see more of what you want on your Instagram Feed. We’re testing the ability to mark multiple posts in Explore as Not Interested. We’ll immediately hide those posts and refrain from showing you similar content in the future.

We’ll also soon start testing the ability to tell Instagram you don’t want to see suggested posts with certain words, phrases or emojis in the caption or hashtags. Whether you’re seeing something that’s not relevant, or have moved on from something you used to like, you can use this feature to stop seeing content that’s not interesting to you. When you add an account to your Favorites you’ll see their posts higher and more often. And you can see a dedicated feed of your Favorites to catch up on just their posts.

Elon Musk cites whistleblower claims in latest effort to scrap Twitter deal

Elon
Musk’s legal team filed another notice on Tuesday to terminate his $44 billion deal to buy Twitter, citing additional reasons. The latest filings come after Twitter’s former head of security, Peiter “Mudge” Zatko, earlier this month alleged “extreme, egregious deficiencies” by the social media company related to privacy, security and content moderation.

On July 8, Musk’s legal team initially filed a notice with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission to terminate the Twitter acquisition. Musk’s team alleged that “Twitter has not complied with its contractual obligations.” The letter on behalf of Musk said the Zatko complaint “alleges far-reaching misconduct at Twitter—all of which was disclosed to Twitter’s directors and senior executives, including (CEO) Parag Agrawal—that is likely to have severe consequences for Twitter’s business.”

Twitter and Meta take down pro-US propaganda campaign

Twitter
and Meta have removed from their platforms an online propaganda campaign aimed at promoting US interests abroad, researchers say. This is the first major covert pro-US propaganda operation taken down by the tech giants, says a report by social media analytics firm Graphika and the Stanford Internet Observatory (SIO).

They removed dozens of accounts used in the campaign in July and August. It is not clear who is behind the propaganda operation. The researchers say Twitter has identified the US and the UK as the "presumptive countries of origin", while Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram, said the US was "the country of origin". The suspended accounts, some of which were set up almost five years ago, were targeting audiences in the Middle East and Central Asia in multiple languages, according to Graphika and the SIO.

SEC Probes Twitter Over Spam Accounts — Court Orders the Social Media Giant to Provide Additional Data to Elon Musk

Twitter
Inc. has been ordered to provide additional data relating to spam and bot accounts to Elon Musk. The social media giant has sued the Tesla CEO for terminating his $44 billion offer to buy the social media platform. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has also questioned Twitter about the number of spam accounts.

Chancellor Kathaleen St. J. McCormick, a judge on the Delaware Court of Chancery, signed an order Thursday requiring Twitter Inc. (NYSE: TWTR) to provide additional data to Tesla and Spacex CEO Elon Musk. Plaintiff Twitter has sued defendants Musk and his two companies, X Holdings I and X Holdings II, for terminating the $44 billion deal to buy the social media platform. Musk has countersued Twitter. U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has probed Twitter over its method of identifying spam accounts.

Instagram denies a viral post that claimed the app shares your location with followers

Instagram
CEO Adam Mosseri and Instagram’s social media team are refuting claims that the Instagram app is tracking location data and sharing it with followers looking for your exact location. A post went viral claimed “a recent iOS update” has made it so that “people can now find your exact location from Instagram”. This prompted many people to go into their phone’s Instagram app settings and disable location permissions for the app.

Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri explains that Instagram device location powers location tag features but the app won’t a user’s location with other people. A viral Instagram post isn’t always the best place to find reliable information – a verification of information is in order. The original post never mentioned whether such a location feature was Instagram’s doing, instead it refers to “a recent iOS update” with no basis.

Instagram says precise location is never shared

Instagram
says viral claims suggesting location tags on content can reveal users' exact locations are false. Viral posts and videos have said a "precise location" toggle in app location settings on iOS and Android devices could share someone's exact location with other Instagram users. Some viral posts suggested this was the result of an Instagram or iOS update.

The setting was first revealed to iPhone and iOS device users in Apple's annual operating system update, iOS 14, in 2020. It was rolled out by Google for Android 12 in 2021. While now viewed by some as a controversial feature, it was praised when it was first released as a way to improve user privacy on mobile devices because it offers an alternative to the blanket application of location services. The setting is automatically enabled for users on apps given permission to access their location.

Facebook, Twitter and Others Remove Pro-U.S. Influence Campaign

Facebook
, Instagram, WhatsApp and Twitter have removed an influence operation from their networks that promoted U.S. foreign policy interests abroad, according to a report on Wednesday by researchers from the Stanford Internet Observatory and the research company Graphika.

It was the first time that an influence campaign pushing U.S. interests abroad had been discovered and taken down from the social media platforms. The operation, which ran for almost five years on eight social networks and messaging apps, promoted the views, values and goals of the United States while attacking the interests of Russia, China, Iran and other countries, the researchers found.

Instagram Testing Copycat Version of BeReal photo app

Instagram
is testing a new feature that copies the photo-sharing app BeReal, which continues to hold on to the number one spot in the U.S. on Apple’s App Store charts this week. Instagram is now running internal tests of a feature called Candid Challenges that will randomly prompt users.

The currently unreleased feature was spotted by Alessandro Paluzzi, a developer known for reverse engineering apps and finding early versions of upcoming updates. According to Paluzzi, Instagram users participating in Candid Challenges will receive a notification at a different time each day to snap a photo of their surroundings. Upon getting the prompt, the Instagram camera will also open with both front and rear-facing shooters, and give users a two-minute window to take a photo, just like on BeReal.

Elon Musk subpoenas Twitter founder Jack Dorsey ahead of court battle

Elon
Musk has launched legal action to summon Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey to appear in court as part of his legal battle with the tech company. Mr Musk is seeking to end his $44bn deal for Twitter after alleging the firm failed to provide enough information on fake account numbers. But the social media site is suing Mr Musk to try to force him to buy it.

The case will be heard in Delaware, US, in October unless both parties decide to settle outside of court beforehand. Twitter hopes that a judge will order Mr Musk - who is the world's richest man - to complete the takeover at the agreed price of $54.20 per share. But as part of the trial preparations, lawyers for Mr Musk have called on his friend, the former boss of Twitter Mr Dorsey, in the hope that he will help support the Tesla boss's argument that the social media company hasn't been honest about the volume of fake accounts on its platform.

Amazon Now Testing TikTok-Like Feed For Its Shopping App

Amazon is the latest company to use inspiration from TikTok and add an interface on its app for its users. Amazon has reportedly started testing the TikTok-like feed which will be used on the shopping app for people to browse through different products in the form of photos and videos.

As reported by the Wall Street Journal, Amazon will be adding the interface called Inspire on the main shopping app. Its testing is going on internally with a small group of Amazon employees, the report adds. It is an interesting idea from Amazon to incorporate videos into the shopping app, following the trends that are popular in the market right now. The short video platform ecosystem has given us TikTok, Reels and YouTube Shorts, and now Amazon.
