Binance recently rebranded its custody arm, now called Ceffu, which launched in Singapore in November 2022.

Amid various reports about Binance trying to revive its crypto licensing plans in Singapore, the crypto exchange has set the record straight. Binance told Cointelegraph that Ceffu, its “independent institutional custody partner,” will apply for an institutional crypto custody license when Singapore’s central bank opens applications.

Singapore has established itself as a hub for crypto businesses owing to its flexible tax policies, access to diverse tech talent and convenient location, which allows companies to operate smoothly within the region in Asian time zones.

The Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) is expected to open up the crypto custody licenses for institutions after relevant amendments to their Payment Services Act. Cointelegraph reached out to Ceffu for insights on the Singaporean crypto market and its upcoming plans to offer crypto custody services to institutional clients.

Athena Yu, vice president of Ceffu, told Cointelegraph that Singapore has a reputation for innovation, good corporate governance and a strong regulatory framework. Yu explained :

“Ceffu launched its Singapore business specifically to provide custody services to institutional investors. Once the relevant amendments to the Payment Services Act go live and the application for a custody license opens, Ceffu will make its official application with the MAS.“

According to a report published by Nikkei, the world’s leading cryptocurrency exchange recently rebranded its custodial arm to “Ceffu,” which launched its institutional custody services in Singapore in November 2022. Pfizer is now the first pharmaceutical company to vote on decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) proposals of the German blockchain-based organization VitaDAO.

The collaboration is part of VitaDAO’s latest fundraising disclosed in late January from strategic members, including Pfizer Ventures, Shine Capital and L1 Digital — among other longevity enthusiasts. The $4.1 million raised will fund longevity research projects and accelerate the spinout of VitaDAO’s first biotech startups, with two more in development for 2023.

“Pfizer is now bringing some of their own scientists to join with the community of researchers who are part of VitaDAO to help incubate some of this research,” Alex Dobrin , the community and awareness steward at VitaDAO, told Cointelegraph.

DeSci has fostered the emergence of a thriving ecosystem with projects ranging from decentralized biotech foundations to funding vehicles. “Some of the major trends in the field can include research and investment platforms, crowdfunding for scientific research, scientists and researcher communities,” explained Tuan Cao, founder of GenomicDAO, a San Francisco-based platform launched on Feb. 19 by artificial intelligence biotech company Genetica.

This decentralized platform aims to establish a community to drive and govern Asian-focused precision medicine initiatives. Its first subsidiary DAO is working on stroke prevention, targeting awareness, and research and development for ischemic strokes.

Worldwide, stroke is one of the most common causes of disability and vascular death. The American Heart Association reports that there were over 77 million ischemic strokes around the world in 2019. A former facilities worker in the U.S. state of Massachusetts is alleged to have stolen nearly $18,000 worth of electricity to run 11 miners in a school’s crawl space.

A former facilities worker who allegedly set up a secret cryptocurrency mining operation inside a Massachusetts school’s crawl space is due for arrest after missing a scheduled court hearing to answer to charges.

Nadeam Nahas was scheduled to be arraigned on Feb. 23 facing charges of vandalizing a school and fraudulent use of electricity, according to media reports.

A default warrant is a type if warrant issued by courts when a person fails to appear in court or comply with an order, and authorizes law enforcement officers to arrest the person.

Nahas, who is said to have previously worked in the facilities department for the town of Cohasset, Massachusetts, United States, is alleged to have stolen electricity worth almost $18,000 in order to power his crypto mining operation in 2021, between April 28 and Dec. 14.

Local police were reportedly initially informed about the operation in December 2021 after Cohasset’s facilities director noticed computers, wiring and ductwork that seemed out of place given they were in a crawl space near the school’s boiler room.

A total of 11 computers were found there, and Nahas was identified as a suspect after a three-month investigation.

Nahas resigned from his position with the town of Cohasset in March.

It is certainly not the first time someone has been charged with stealing electricity in order to mine cryptocurrency.

In July 2021, Malaysian officials destroyed $1.2 million worth of Bitcoin mining rigs that were confiscated from residents who were stealing electricity to mine.

A year prior, in August 2020, Bulgarian authorities arrested two men for illegally siphoning off more than $1.5 million in electricity to operate two crypto mining farms. Open / Comment
