Botswana president Mokgweetsi Masisi recently touted blockchain technology as an innovative solution which can help the global diamond industry eradicate so-called blood diamonds. Masisi argued that by using this technology, the global diamond industry is able to prove to stakeholders that diamonds in formal markets are sustainably sourced.

In his speech at a recently held meeting of diamond industry stakeholders, Masisi argued that the global diamond industry’s objective of achieving sustainable diamond mining requires investment in research and innovation. He suggested that when such investments are made, they not only “minimize the impact on the environment” but also help to remove blood diamonds from official markets.

To curb the role of these diamonds in fueling conflicts in Africa, major global diamond-producing countries including Botswana agreed to a system of certifying the gemstones. However, more than a decade after the so-called Kimberley Process Certification Scheme came into force, blood diamonds are still reportedly finding their way to global markets.

Ripple announced Tuesday that it has formed a new partnership with Uphold, a multi-asset digital currency platform that operates in over 184 countries, offering access to over 200 crypto and fiat currencies.

Uphold CEO Simon McLoughlin explained that his company’s platform “features a fully automated, high-frequency trading stack” that is connected to 30 underlying trading venues. Global investment bank Morgan Stanley’s wealth management division published a report titled “Will Crypto Spring Ever Come?” this week. Morgan Stanley analyst Denny Galindo outlined that there are four phases of cryptocurrency prices. “The four-year cryptocurrency cycle roughly corresponds to the four seasons of the year,” he noted.

Galindo described crypto spring as the period preceding each halving where “the price of bitcoin generally recovers from the cycle’s low point, but investor interest tends to be weak.”

He pointed out that there have been three crypto winters since 2011, lasting about 13 months each. The Morgan Stanley analyst shared:

Historically, most of bitcoin’s gains come directly after a ‘halving’ event that occurs every four years. Estimates vary, but history indicates the next halving could occur sometime in April 2024. Signs indicate that ‘crypto winter’ — bitcoin’s cyclical bear-market decline — may be in the past.

The analyst concluded: “While no one can tell you if now is the right time to buy or sell cryptocurrency, today is the right time to learn more about the crypto market’s cyclical tendencies so that you can ask questions, monitor trends and determine for yourself if the cycle will repeat a fourth time and whether to invest.” Open / Comment
