Interoperable payment technologies supported by regulation will be needed to prevent the metaverse from becoming fragmented and dominated by powerful private interests, a study by the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) said. Interest in immersive computer-generated environments, otherwise known as the metaverse, peaked in early 2022, with Facebook changing its name to Meta. “It is not a foregone conclusion that the metaverse will achieve widespread adoption,” the BIS authors said.

Hong Kong director Stephen Chow, known for the iconic film Kung Fu Hustle, launched a profile picture nonfungible token (NFT) collection titled “Nobody” earlier this month. At the time of publication, the collection had witnessed over 9,695 Ether ($23 million) traded with a daily volume of 2,713 Ether. Over 125,000 users participated in the airdrop, with 2,500 Nobody NFTs up for grabs. The total supply of Nobodys is capped at 10,000.

The singer of “Gangnam Style,” PSY, could be set for an NFT clash with regulators in his native South Korea. Per Biz World, the singer’s entertainment agency P Nation launched an NFT-powered pre-sale project for PSY’s concert tour in 2023. In October 2022, P Nation said it was launching a fan community called soPSYety. The agency said that the project was backed by NFTs, including a range named PSYger.
