The UCI Track Champions League and Infinite Reality have launced a metaverse platform for the Track Champions League. First revealed at a trial for the London event last year, which Broadcast Sport wrote about here, the platform includes public and private lounges for viewers to meet each other in, biometric rider race data to see during races, on-demand highlights and exclusive content such as behind-the-scenes docuseries Back On Track.

The metaverse will be available on the App Store from 10 November, leading into the two London rounds taking place this weekend. It will only be available on iOS at first, with Android and desktop versions to come “soon”. You can see the metaverse in use in the video below. Following the races, former UCI World Champion Matthew Richardson and reigning Olympic Champion Kelsey Mitchell will take part in the first live meet and greets on the platform, where fans will have the opportunity to discuss their recent performances face-to-face, in real-time. These will take place at 18:30 and 19:30 GMT on Friday 10 November, and 17:00 and 18:00 GMT on Saturday 11 November

Individual creators and brands will ultimately determine the future of the metaverse, not a centralized entity, according to the co-founders of The Sandbox. On Nov. 3, the team behind the Ethereum-based metaverse announced on X (formerly Twitter) it had made The Sandbox Map accessible to everyone, where “LAND” owners can publish their own experiences without needing to partake in an application process (which was previously required).

“Now [anyone] can open their experience to the public [and] make it accessible, which will increase the amount of experience and content that people can play and discover on the platform,” Sandbox co-founder Sebastien Borget told Cointelegraph in a Nov. 2 interview during Hong Kong FinTech Week. The notion that users can create and own content and property in Web3 is at the forefront of Sandbox’s strategy, Borget iterated. Sandbox said it will also update its Game Maker tool before 2024, its experience-building and testing tool that is set to introduce new gameplay mechanics, templates and social interactions to make content production even easier. Borget said this will drive engagement across a range of industries.

NFT marketplace OpenSea is letting go of half of its employees as the firm plots a major redirection. The firm is creating a new foundation to foster innovation, OpenSea co-founder and CEO Devin Finzer wrote in a social media thread. Doing so requires "shifting to a smaller team with a direct connection to users." The move is a part of the firm's push toward the so-called "OpenSea 2.0," which focuses on product upgrades to technology, reliability, speed, quality and experience.

Finzer noted that OpenSea's redirection comes after they've heard feedback from users that the company felt like more of "a follower, not a leader." "And that’s not who we want to be. We want to move with speed, quality, and conviction to make more meaningful bets," Finzer wrote. "We’re making these changes with our community in mind. As we rebuild, we'll continue supporting our existing products, and will be iteratively testing OpenSea 2.0 in public — remaining nimble, attentive, and focused." A company spokesperson said affected employees will receive four months of severance, among other benefits. The new organization will be flatter, with fewer middle managers.

Shiba Inu community member and Telegram group admin and community manager Ragnar Shib took to X to denounce any forms of affiliation to some NFT projects publicized in his name. Ragnar felt the need to caution the community as the proliferation of projects on Shibarium might see some fraudulent ones make their emergence as well. The developer tasked SHIB community members to do their research and understand he maintains no affiliation with some of these projects.

Ragnar’s disclosure aligns with the commitment of the Shiba Inu team members to guide the community on how to navigate its fast-growing ecosystem. According to Ragnar, everyone is welcome to build applications on Shibarium, keeping with its key design as an open ecosystem. With the ecosystem growing as envisaged, the Shib team has doubled down its effort to sensitize its community from hackers to cases where users need to beware of bug-related issues on Shibarium-affiliated platforms. As reported earlier by The Crypto Basic, Shiba Inu’s lead developer, Shytoshi Kusama also sounds alarm on fake tokens making the rounds in the ecosystem. In one of these instances, Kusama warned users not to purchase BONE and LEASH on PuppyNet, Shibarium’s testnet before it launched on the mainnet months later.

The United Kingdom’s government is in danger of regulating nonfungible tokens (NFTs) in a way that doesn’t suit the true nature of the nascent technology, says Mintable CEO and founder Zach Burks. In an interview with Cointelegraph, Burks said he believes a recent report from a U.K. parliamentary committee significantly exaggerates the role NFTs play in copyright infringement and fails to recognize that they are more than just volatile digital pictures.

“NFTs are in a transition phase where they’re moving away from the speculative boom of PFPs, and now it’s going into utilities of brands implementing NFTs across a whole range of different things,” Burks explained. In the Oct. 11 report, the Culture, Media and Sport Committee urged the government to take action to protect artists and content creators from copyright infringement associated with NFTs. Burks acknowledged that copyright protections and intellectual property rights for artists are of paramount importance, pointing to Mintable’s own IP protection algorithm it uses to prevent plagiarism on its platform. However, he explained that while these issues should be a top priority for all NFT platforms.
