While we made nice profits, shorting the GBP in the last weeks, we missed yesterday's heavy slump after the Bank of England decided to keep rates steady on Thursday. We already expected that there is a chance that the BOE surprises the market in our previous GBP/USD signal on Tuesday. However, we were alone in this assessment: Analysts and investors had firmly expected a 15 bp rate hike. In general, the expectation of a hawkish BoE was the main reason why the GBP was able to hold its ground against its peers. Recent gains (much of which has been already lost) are now under pressure. The GBP is also under pressure as tensions with France remain high, the country continues to suffer from very high COVID cases and the GBP sees record high inflation figures ... and the BOE deciding to not interfere. The average cost of a home rose 0.9% in October to a record £270,027 pounds. That left values 8.1% higher than a year earlier, the fastest annual gain since June earlier this year. The non-farm payrolls will be in focus today - which could further support the USD, in particular if the hourly earnings rate approaches the 5.0% mark - which would be another sign that inflation is less "transitory" as the Fed suggest, further increasing pressure on the Fed to accelerate the normalization process.
