Solar + storage provider unveils new financing structure for C&I, community solar projects

Solar
PV module manufacturer and energy storage provider Q Cells has unveiled a new financing structure to boost value in C&I and community solar projects.

The company announced an investment into a solar + storage portfolio developed by Amped Solutions through its new ‘Grid Equity’ financing structure. Under the framework, Q Cells will provide capital investment in exchange for the rights to future grid services revenue expected to be generated by the portfolio in California.

Amped Solutions, meanwhile, will maintain ownership of systems and all other revenue streams, such as bill savings, incentives, and tax benefits, the company said.

Q Cells is a leading residential and commercial solar module manufacturer, obtaining 24.8% share of the residential market and 19.1% share of the commercial market in FY 2020, according to a report by Wood Mackenzie Power & Renewables.

An H2 Future: GE And New York Power Authority Advancing Green Hydrogen Initiative

The goal of using so-called "green hydrogen" in a multiprong approach to decarbonization took a big step forward last week when New York announced a demonstration project to assess the feasibility of using hydrogen-blend fuels in an existing power generation facility.

Starting this fall, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced, the New York Power Authority (NYPA) will conduct a pilot project to temporarily replace natural gas with a "green hydrogen" and natural gas blend at its Brentwood Power Station on Long Island. GE Power will play an integral role in the project. The power station runs on a GE LM6000 combustion turbine originally derived from an aircraft engine.

Decisive Move: U.S. Government Clears Vineyard Wind, America’s First Commercial-Scale Offshore Project

Located south of Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard is known as a summer destination for the rich and famous. But if the island is where well-heeled vacationers go to recharge their batteries, it’s set to soon be associated with another kind of energy altogether: America’s first commercial-scale offshore wind farm, projected to generate 800 megawatts and supply renewable electricity to thousands of U.S. homes.

This week, the Vineyard Wind 1 project received the final major step in the federal review process, obtaining the Record of Decision from the U.S. Department of the Interior Bureau of Ocean Energy Management. “Today’s Record of Decision is not about the start of a single project, but the launch of a new industry,” said Vineyard Wind CEO Lars T. Pedersen. “Receiving this final major federal approval means the jobs, economic benefits and clean energy revolution associated with the Vineyard Wind 1

Charged Up: This GE Tech Is Engineered To Speed Up Energy Transition

Last year, GE made a commitment to becoming carbon-neutral in its own operations by 2030. In GE’s 2020 Sustainability Report, released this summer, the company is going even further, with an ambition to be net zero by 2050, including Scope 3 emissions from the use of sold products. GE’s tradition of innovation will play a big role as engineers find new ways to help solve looming challenges like the energy transition to address climate change.

“I feel really privileged to be part of GE at this pivotal moment for our people, communities and planet,” says Roger Martella, GE’s chief sustainability officer. “I am one of roughly 174,000 employees who get to contribute to these solutions, which are not only good for business but good for the planet. It’s a humbling opportunity. To be honest, we know the stakes are high, and we know that we have to succeed.”
