JPMorgan is on a blockchain hiring spree

JPMorgan is on a hiring spree for its blockchain unit, seeking to fill positions across audit, engineering and marketing, several LinkedIn postings reveal.

The bank—which has been active in the blockchain space for several years—announced in October 2020 that it would bring all of its blockchain-related products and services under a new business unit, dubbed Onyx. Those services including Liink, a blockchain network of hundreds of financial-services firms and corporations, as well as its Coin Systems business, as per its website.

Australian government grants $4 million to two blockchain startups

Australia’s Minister for Industry, Science and Technology announced 5.6 million Australian dollars ($4.2 million) in grants to two blockchain-focused companies, including traceability firm Everledger and technology consulting startup Convergence.tech.

Everledger, a company focused on building a global registry for diamonds, has received 3 million AUD ($2.2 million) to investigate blockchain technology’s use cases for creating digital certifications for critical minerals through the extraction and movement phases. As previously reported, the firm was deploying blockchain technology by software giant IBM for a transparency platform for the diamond industry.

Crypto Twitter has exploded with talk that Apple will soon announce a Bitcoin purchase in the billions of dollars. For example, Galaxy Trading is one of many pushing this rumor. They say the figure is more than $2 billion.

Ethereum (ETH) gas prices drop to lowest rates since March 2020

The price of ETH isn’t the only thing that’s been dropping in recent months. The cost to use the Ethereum network has declined as well.

The average price of gas on the Ethereum blockchain is at its lowest point since March 2020, according to a report today by crypto market research firm Coin Metrics.

Gas refers to the transaction fee on Ethereum, and it’s currently in the 15-30 gwei range. That’s down from roughly 10 times that amount in April, when transaction fees rocketed into the double-digit dollar amount as ETH’s price was soaring.

Iran to prepare bill to centralize and regulate cryptocurrency use

Iranian lawmakers recently drafted a bill to “support cryptocurrency mining and organizing the domestic market for exchanges.”

The plan involves making the Central Bank of Iran the primary regulatory body regarding the domestic exchange of cryptocurrencies within three months. This includes plans to prohibit the exchange of any cryptocurrency within the country, aside from a national one, as means of payment.

A particularly interesting section of the bill states that domestic crypto miners will be controlled by the Ministry of Industry. Miners must be granted a license from the ministry to operate, as well as a license from the Energy Ministry to construct power plants required to run their operations- which allegedly caused blackouts by draining the city of its electricity supply in May.

Ripple ODL registered in UAE to provide payments & other electronic financial services

XRP community members @RipplePandaXRP and @WKahneman posted tweets announcing that the Ripple ODL trademark is now officially registered with the UAE Ministry of Economy.

According to the tweet, the Liquidity On Demand product has been registered by the commercial department of the UAE regulator to provide P2P financial data delivery services.

Director of Developer Relations at Ripple, Matt Hamilton, set the record straight on XRP and the XRP Ledger.

Before the SEC vs. Ripple lawsuit, the narrative surrounding XRP centered around it not being a “real” cryptocurrency. This is due to several characteristics; chief among them were criticisms over the network’s “closed” centralized nodes.

Over 100K ETH staked in Ethereum 2.0 in a single day

The total amount of ETH staked ahead of the upcoming Ethereum 2.0 upgrade has grown significantly and will likely continue to increase as the launch date draws closer.

Data from CryptoQuant revealed yesterday that more than 100k ETH worth over $200 million as per current prices was sent to the Ethereum 2.0 deposit contract in a single day.

With the new staking, the total value of ETH now locked up in the Eth2 contract is currently more than 5% of the cryptocurrency’s entire circulating supply.

VC giant Andreessen Horowitz has announced intentions to launch a new $2.2 billion fund focused on the cryptocurrency industry.

Roughly three years after releasing its first crypto-related product, the private US venture capital firm a16z has outlined plans to double down via a ‘radically optimistic’ digital asset fund. The company’s partners called the industry ‘the future of finance.”
