#DeFiBreakdown 14 - #Layer2 Scaling

When the demand to use Ethereum is high, the network becomes congested, leading to transaction fees increase. Users who cannot afford those fees are unable to complete trading activities. That is where layer 2 comes into play

Layer 2s are focused on tackling the issues the main chain may experience, such as low transaction throughput & poor scalability without changing the underlying blockchain's structure. They also contribute to better data privacy & the development of highly scalable systems.

Layer 2s are able to shoulder some of the burdens of the main chain by sending data to different processing channels. It then reports the processed data back to the main chain to finalize the results.

Hence, the underlying blockchain is less congested & much more scalable.

We can identify 5 approaches of Layer 2s: Rollups (Zero-knowledge rollups, Optimistic rollups), State channels, Sidechains, Plasma & Validium.

Its perks , however, are significant. Derivatives can be a useful tool for investors, allowing them to make excellent gains if proper techniques and strategies supplement the trade.

A large portion of derivatives volume resides on centralized exchanges today. Futures now have around ~ $15B of open interest for Bitcoin with Binance leading the way, followed by Bitget, FTX and Bybit. dYdX is far from the top.
