What methods of work does Elon Musk use?

Elon Musk is known all over the world for his successful innovations. His ideas and company management have generated billions. What is the famous engineer and businessman guided by? He told about five steps to speed up the creation of new products at Tesla and SpaceX in an interview with the YouTube channel Everyday Astronaut.

Question the correctness of the requirements
Everyone makes mistakes, no matter how smart they are. Almost all the ideas at the stage of issuing the assignment are wrong, so it is worth supplementing and changing them.
Whatever the task, the head of Tesla advises giving it to one specific performer, not an entire department. And the one who gave the task is obliged to take responsibility for it.

Get rid of excess
“In fact, if it doesn't take 10% of the time to get things back to normal, you're not removing enough unnecessary parts and processes,” Musk said. The bottom line is that people tend to add a lot of details to projects that they think can hedge or help. However, this makes projects overwhelming.

Simplify
A common mistake of engineers, according to the entrepreneur, is that they start to improve and optimize things that should not exist at all. "Why does it happen? It's just that everyone was taught at school and university: if you have a question, you need an answer. You cannot tell the teacher that his question is idiotic, you need to answer. So everyone has a kind of mental straitjacket”, Musk added.

Speed up the cycle
The next step is to accelerate. But this can only be done after making sure to go through the previous steps. “If you’re digging your own grave, you don’t have to dig it faster, just stop doing it,” Musk said of entrepreneurs who are ahead of the curve.

Move on to automation
This is the last step. Musk himself says that he made a mistake more than once, moving in the opposite direction. That is, he started with automation, then went on to speed up the cycle, and so on. Then he had to start all over again. “In creating the Tesla Model 3, I literally automated, accelerated, simplified and then removed,” Musk explained.

Vietnam after-school learning startup Marathon raises $1.5M in pre-seed round

Marathon Education was created after its founders realized after-school education in Vietnam hadn’t evolved much since they were kids. Some of the most popular tuition centers in big cities teach hundreds of students at once.

Pham launched Marathon six weeks ago with his brother-in-law Tran Viet Tung to make after-school learning more accessible in Vietnam. Today the startup is announcing it has raised $1.5 million in pre-seed.

Marathon is currently focused on math and science courses for grades six to 12 of the National Curriculum developed by Vietnam’s Ministry of Education and Training (MOET), and will eventually cover all MOET subjects.

“If you speak to students, I think the biggest issue we’re seeing is accessibility,” said Pham. “If you’re a student in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, there’s no guarantee that you’ll get into classes run by top tutors.” Meanwhile, students in other areas often travel to Tier 1 cities before major tests, like university entrance exams, staying in a hostel for about a month while attending prep courses.

For teachers, running a center means handling administrative tasks like marketing, admissions and parent communications, which cuts into the time they spend designing their courses.

Before joining Marathon, teachers go through a screening process, including how many of their previous students passed exams or improved their grades. Marathon pairs them with teaching assistants who work directly with groups of about 20 to 25 students during online lectures, answering questions through instant messenger, and then manage breakout rooms to go through the lessons in detail.

Marathon plans to continue its online-only model after lockdowns end and kids go back to in-person classes for regular school.

Silicon Valley is every budding startup's dream, but not everyone is lucky enough to be born in the United States. What should immigrants from India, Ethiopia, Spain do?

Do not worry. Not only most of the funds invested in the development of startups come from foreign investors. The creators of new technologies are not always Americans too. 51% of Billion dollar startups in US are built by immigrants.

It doesn't matter where you come from if your idea can change the world.

Four actions model

To reconstruct the elements of customer value, there is a four-step model. To break the compromise and create a new value curve, four basic questions need to be answered.

• What factors that are taken for granted should be eliminated?
• What factors should be significantly reduced compared to existing standards?
• What factors should be significantly improved over existing standards?
• Which factors that have never been suggested should be created?

The first question gets you thinking about leaving the competition in your industry.
The second question leads to finding out which products or services are unnecessarily complicated.
The third question challenges you to identify and eliminate the trade-offs your industry forces consumers to make.
The fourth question helps to discover completely new sources of value for buyers.
By answering the first two questions, you can understand how you can reduce costs compared to competitors.
The second two questions help to understand how you can add value to the buyer and create new demand. Together, they allow you to figure out how you can revolutionize the industry.

Consider the wine situation in the United States: by going against industry logic and looking at alternatives, Casella Wines created a [yellowtail] wine that was out of competition. It was a party drink that was perfect for beer and cocktails lovers.

In two years, [yellowtail] became the fastest growing brand in the history of the Australian and American wine industry, and the main wine imported into the United States. By August 2003, it was the most popular red wine in the United States in 750 ml bottles. By mid-2003, average sales were 4.5 million bottles per year. [yellowtail] didn't steal sales from his competitors - he expanded the market.

Casella Wines took all four steps — abolish, downgrade, enhance, and create — and eventually opened up an uncompetitive market space. The company created three new factors - ease of use, ease of choice, entertainment - and discarded or downgraded all others. Many Americans do not drink wine because its complex taste is difficult to get used to. [yellowtail] has a clear, uncomplicated aftertaste with sweet fruity notes.
Also [yellowtail] producers have given up aging. This accelerated the return on investment of the wine produced. Experts criticized the sweet fruity flavor, believing that it prevents people from appreciating good grapes and the ancient craftsmanship of winemakers. It may be so, but [yellowtail] took consumers’ fancy.

In the past, bottles of the same type were offered with many incomprehensible words, which oppressed the average consumer. Casella Wines has created only two types of wine: Chardonnay, the most popular white wine in the United States, and Shiraz, a red wine. The technical jargon was kicked out of the bottle and replaced with a catchy, simple, unconventional label.

Wine broke all records of ease of choice when its producers made the sellers of retail stores "ambassadors" of their brand, dressing the sellers in their national costumes.

Casella Wines was the first to bottle white and red wine in identical bottles. This made manufacturing and purchasing easier. The elite and long history of wineries confused the masses, so Casella Wines broke with tradition.
By offering such a jump in value, producers raised the price of their wines, pricing a bottle at $ 6.99, more than double the price of the cheapest wines. Since July 2001, when this wine first appeared on the shelves of retail stores, sales have continued to grow.

How did Pokemon Go achieve its success?

Everyone probably knows about this game. Even those who have not played themselves have probably heard dozens of news about strange travels in search of Pokémon. Where did this excitement come from?

John Hanke, CEO of Pokemon Go studio Niantic, pointed out three main goals of the app that led to its success:

Exercises. Most sports apps require you to do something, so skipping a workout makes you feel guilty and quickly delete whatever reminds you of it. Pokemon Go only gives you an opportunity for a certain reward, and you yourself choose whether to use it.

Exploration of the world. The game pushes you to discover new places, get acquainted with historical buildings and beautiful views, since they are vaults or halls for pumping and battle.

Socialization. Players around the world share finds, organize excursions and searches. At high levels, cooperation with other players is essential for conquest. It gives people a reason to spend time together.

Before Pokemon Go, Niantic was best known for Ingress, a game that forced players to explore the world around them and conquer territories. Niantic has taken a lot from Ingress to make Pokemon Go a success.

Here comes The Pokemon Company, a joint venture that owns the rights to Pokemon, in which Game Freak, the toy maker Creatures, and Nintendo have equal shares.

Google and The Pokemon Company first worked together on April 1, 2014, when a short but very viral game came out in which you had to search for Pokemon using the Google Maps mobile application. People loved it - Google Maps with Pokemon was like "ice cream with chocolate chips," says Hanke. And so the idea was born.

In late 2015, Niantic split from Google. Nintendo and The Pokemon Company took part in a 20+ Million Investment Round to launch the project.

At E3 (Electronic Entertainment Expo) 2016, which runs from June 14-16 in Los Angeles, Nintendo officially unveiled the seventh generation of Pokémon games, Pokémon Sun and Moon.

“We have honored the spirit of the original game,” says Hanke. - "I like what we did."
