CB Insights estimates that at least 250 private companies are working on such technologies today. At the same time, most of them are startups at an early stage of development.

The market leader, of course, is OpenAI. Its capitalization is 10+ times higher than that of other companies, accounting for the industry's lion's share of venture financing.
From 2017 to the beginning of 2023, OpenAI alone raised about $11B, while all other startups in the generative AI market combined — $5+ B.
Interestingly, growth was also recorded last year, which could have been more successful for the venture capital market. In 2022, compared with 2021, the volume of venture investments in the industry increased by 70%.
