In a congressional hearing, U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Chairman Gary Gensler stated that the regulator needs new resources and expertise to tackle misconduct in the crypto market. Gensler also testified before the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Financial Service and General Government about the agency's FY 2024 budget request, seeking $2.436 billion to increase staff and accelerate enforcement investigations. He emphasized that the SEC had received over 35,000 complaints and referrals, and had taken more than 750 enforcement actions in FY 2022, resulting in $6.4 billion in penalties and disgorgement. The SEC has recently taken action against several crypto companies, including Coinbase, Tron, Kraken, and Paxos.
