What is crypto?
Crypto is short for cryptocurrency.
Cryptocurrency is a digital currency which only exists on computers. Cryptocurrency is transferred between peers meaning there is no middleman like a bank.
Transactions are recorded on a digital public ledger called a “blockchain”. Transaction data and the ledger are encrypted using cryptography. Crytpocurrency is decentralized, meaning it is controlled by users and computer algorithms and not a central government.
Cryptocurrency is distributed, meaning the blockchain is hosted on many computers across the globe. Cryptocurrencies are traded on online cryptocurrency exchanges similar to stock exchanges. Bitcoin (traded under the 'ticker' symbol BTC) is one of many cryptocurrencies; other cryptocurrencies include “Ethereum (ETH),” “Monero (XRM),” and “Pirate Chain (ARRR).” Alternatives to Bitcoin are called “altcoins.”
