What's the big news about Indonesia's payment ban?
During a virtual seminar on 15 June 2021, Bank Indonesia (BI)'s Governor Perry Warjiy announced that the central bank has banned the use of cryptocurrencies as payment instruments or other financial services tools. He also explained that to ensure conformance to this policy, the central bank will be mobilizing its field supervisors.

So, what does the future holds for Indonesia's crypto market?
Although BI has stated that it does not plan to allow the use of cryptocurrencies as payment instruments or financial tools for the next 10 years, the central bank is planning to issue its digital rupiah in the form of a CBDC. With 33% i.e. 92 million of its adult population being unbanked as of August 2019, Indonesia's crypto market certainly has a key role to play in the country's future development.
