What makes Indian Currency reign supreme?
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is the highest monetary authority in the country. It prints the currency notes of all Indian denominations (except 1). The Reserve Bank has the sole authority to issue bank notes in India. Reserve Bank, like other central banks the world over, changes the design of banknotes from time to time.
Counterfeiting has been the biggest challenge for RBI. Demonetisation, though claims, has helped reduce it but ace-level scammers still continue to make fakes. Are Indian notes really that easy to copy? How did Shahid make it look so convenient? Sure, it’s fiction, so everything floats, but we still had to deep dive. This is what we learnt about the security features of our very own Indian notes -
#1 Watermarks Apparently, there’s a well-established reason why people try to read and examine their notes against the light. In Mahatma Gandhi’s picture, there lies a watermark with a light and shade effect and multi-directional lines in the watermark window. It’s easy to spot, but hard to recreate.
#2 Intaglio PrintingDid you know you can actually touch and feel the prints on the notes? This is due to Intaglio printing i.e raised prints, specifically on the portrait of Mahatma Gandhi, the Reserve Bank seal, the guarantee and promise clause, the Ashoka Pillar Emblem on the left, and the RBI Governor's signature. Pretty cool, isn’t it?
#3 FluorescenceThe number panels of the notes are printed in fluorescent ink. The notes also have optical fibres. Both of these can be seen when exposed to ultraviolet light.
#4 Security Thread There’s a very clear visible security thread passing straight up with the letterings RBI, Bharat, and 2000. These airtight indications were first introduced in the ₹1000 note released in October 2000. When held against the light, this thread (line) can be easily spotted.
Our beautiful currency notes are quite the work of art. The intricate details and components are inspired or borrowed directly from our culture and history. Apart from these features, there are many more features - language panel, Swachh Bharat logo, varied typesetting, denominations printed in different colours - that make our currency so wonderfully distinct.
