An apartment in Portugal has changed hands, with the buyer paying directly in cryptocurrency in a reported first for the country. The home was purchased for 3 bitcoins without conversion to euros, under a new regulation permitting real estate deals with digital currencies.

A three-room (two-bedroom) apartment in the Portuguese city of Braga has been bought with cryptocurrency without any conversion to fiat money. Local media reports have described the deal as a first in the history of the country’s real estate market.The new owner paid 3 bitcoins (BTC) for the home, worth around 110,000 euros at the time the purchase took place. The title deed was transferred in Porto’s Póvoa de Varzim district this past Thursday, May 5.

Bitcoin halving occurs every four years. With BTC’s supply rate decreasing 50% after each one, the system will continue until roughly 2140, when the last Bitcoin is mined.Bitcoin has crossed the halfway line of its third halving, which the community sees as a bullish sign for its price since the issuing rate is reduced by 50%.

After Block 735,000 was mined on Thursday by Poolin, earning 0.16215354 BTC ($6,402.45) in fees, Bitcoin officially entered the second half of the third halving cycle. Grayscale CEO Michael Sonnenshein in a discussion with Anthony Pompliano on May 6 said the SEC could soon approve the conversion of the Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (GBTC) to a spot Bitcoin ETF. He believes the SEC thinking has evolved regarding Bitcoin ETFs as it approves two Bitcoin futures ETFs under the Securities Act 33, instead of the Investment Company Act of 1940.

MicroStrategy’s CEO Michael Saylor also supports the Grayscale Bitcoin ETF as the Bitcoin Trust already has billions of dollars in over 800,000 investor accounts. Moreover, investors have trust in Grayscale and do trades every day.Grayscale CEO Michael Sonnenshein says it is difficult to predict a time frame on when the SEC could approve the Bitcoin ETF. The brand will accept cryptocurrency payments in some US stores at the end of this month, and plans to extend the pilot to all of its directly operated North America stores this summer. The move marks a major validation for the currency from a leading luxury brand.

Crypto payments are usually accepted in physical spaces through a QR code or NFC reader on an existing point of sale terminal that connects with a customer’s smartphone cryptocurrency app, similar to mobile credit card payments. A retailer can automatically convert the payment to fiat currency, such as US dollars, or keep the payments in the form of cryptocurrency. It will also accept Dogecoin, a “meme” cryptocurrency originally created as a joke.
