In a Tuesday hearing before the House Committee on Financial Services, Sherman said SEC enforcement director Gurbir Grewal needed to show “fortitude and courage” when pursuing securities cases against cryptocurrency exchanges in the United States.

Grewal responded that he was unable to specify if the SEC enforcement division was investigating any crypto exchanges, but referred to a case brought against Poloniex in August 2021 for trading cryptocurrencies deemed securities to U.S. investors on its platform between July 2017 and November 2019. Sherman countered that the crypto trading platform was a “small fish” among other major exchanges, likely referring to Kraken, Coinbase, and Binance US.

2022-07-19 13:35:04 Paraguay’s crypto framework one step away from becoming law

The Paraguayan Senate passed a bill on July 14 establishing a tax and regulatory framework for businesses operating in the cryptocurrency and the crypto mining sectors.The bill, introduced last July by Senator Fernando Silva Facetti and passed in Congress in May before reaching the Senate.

Local news outlet ABC reported on July 14 that companies that operate in the crypto industry would be treated the same as those dealing with securities for tax purposes. As a result, they will be exempted by the Undersecretary of State for Taxation from paying a Value Added Tax (VAT) but will be included in the income tax regime. According to reports, Senator Facetti said that modifications made to the bill over the last year “improved the original project.”

The booming blockchain sector in Vietnam is having to deal with a serious deficit in specialists, local media revealed. Despite the large number of software engineers in the country, those with blockchain expertise meet less than a fifth of the current demand, with businesses already looking for talent abroad.

Vietnam is facing a lack of human resources hampering the advance of projects in its rapidly developing blockchain industry, the English-language portal Bizhub reported. The Southeast Asian country has plenty of capable software developers but few of them have the needed qualifications for distributed ledger technologies.The shortages makes recruitment difficult and Vietnam doesn’t have many training programs to alleviate the problem, noted Trinh Ngoc Duc, chief executive of the company.

The level of detail provided by Circle in its Thursday report, while unaudited, is a first for the company and a notable display of transparency given the scrutiny stablecoins currently face from regulators around the world, which recently intensified following the collapse of Terra.

Circle’s report shows that the company no longer holds commercial paper—a type of short-term, unsecured debt instrument—as part of its serves. In July of last year, Circle held 9% of its reserves in commercial paper but later promised to completely move to cash and U.S. treasuries. USDC is currently the fourth largest cryptocurrency by market cap, and second largest stablecoin in the crypto economy. A stablecoin is a token value-pegged to a relatively price-stable asset or currency, such as the U.S. dollar.

Members of the Ethereum community have set their sights on a new date for the blockchain's long-awaited Merge.Come September 19, the network is expected to merge from its current state as a proof-of-work (PoW) blockchain to an energy-efficient proof-of-stake (PoS) network.

The Beacon Chain is the PoS version of Ethereum currently running in parallel to the PoW-based mainnet. It launched in December 2020, marking the beginning of the multi-stage upgrade.The Merge event planned for September will effectively move Ethereum activity over to the Beacon Chain. Superphiz.eth included a more detailed outline of the next steps, including a final trial on the last Ethereum testnet, Goerli. Testnets offer developers a test environment to trial new updates and changes to a blockchain network without the risk of collapsing said network or causing disruptions for users.

This school of thought has arisen from the fact that Ethereum is now moving to a new proof mechanism and a lot of personalities have argued that this makes the digital asset a security. One of these has been a Twitter user and Bitcoin supporter who goes by the name Nick Payton on Twitter. According to Payton, the fact that users of the network were able to vote to change to proof of stake made it a security.

The Internet of Things blockchain Helium, encountered a 4-hour network outage early this week owing to validator troubles that happened after a software update. This software update also resulted in delay in transaction finality. To resume normal functions, Helium’s team solved the issue by skipping the blockchain forward by a block.

The status update mentioned that due to lack in the network consensus, the token transfers were left partially complete because new blocks were not being produced.Helium network reported that it comprises of 43 validators which are randomly chosen in fixed intervals that go on to provide the network consensus. During the resolution process, the engineers of Helium mentioned that there were two reasons why the validators got affected and halted the creation of consensus on the network.
