Top NFT Blockchains — Ethereum

The most popular blockchain for NFTs is currently Ethereum. It’s highly decentralized and provides all the financial and legal services one typically needs for transactions without the need for any intermediaries. It also houses some of the most popular NFT marketplaces (OpenSea), NFT projects (CryptoPunks and the Bored Ape Yacht Club), and NFT artists (Pak and Beeple).

Unfortunately, it is also one of the most expensive options and uses a lot of energy. This is because Ethereum works using a Proof-of-Work (PoW) mechanism. In short, PoW requires computers to compete with one another to solve complex puzzles to add blocks and transactions to the blockchain.

Overwatch and Warcraft studio Blizzard is polling its players on their interest in NFTs and ‘play to earn’ cryptocurrency games.

As spotted by GameRant, several players were asked to complete a YouGov survey this weekend that mentioned the polarising technologies.

One section of the survey asked participants how interested they would be if crypto and NFTs were introduced to Activision Blizzard products, along with more conventional features such as cross-play, VR and subscription services.

Activision Blizzard is yet to officially enter the NFT space. The company is set to be acquired by Microsoft, which framed the $70bn deal as providing the “building blocks for the metaverse”.

Numerous game companies have already started selling digital items as NFTs, including Konami and Atari, though this has attracted criticism from some due to the format’s high carbon footprint and what many perceive to be cynical implementation.

Meta reveals hefty fees for asset trading on its Horizon Worlds metaverse

In a recent announcement, Meta revealed that it would allow its creators to monetize virtual content via the platform. Therefore, providing additional revenue through the trade of in-game items, wearables, experiences, unlockable content and visual effects.

All this extra opportunity comes at a premium however, as Meta plans to take hefty share of the pie. Essentially, creators will face an initial ‘platform fee’ from the app on which it resides. Then, Meta themselves will take a massive 25% of whatever’s left over. So, for example, a purchase via the Meta-owned Quest store would be subject to a 30% platform charge. Following which, Meta would take an extra 25% of what’s left, leaving the creator with a little over half of the funds.
