US authorities accuse two foreigners of conspiring to help North Korea evade sanctions

Spanish citizen Alejandro Cao de Benos and British citizen Christopher Emms were accused of recruiting former Ethereum researcher Virgil Griffith to illegally provide cryptocurrency and blockchain technology services to North Korea.

Prosecutors said Cao de Benos and Emms arranged for Griffith to travel to North Korea via China in April 2019 to attend their Pyongyang Blockchain and Cryptocurrency Conference.

At the conference, Emms and Griffith allegedly taught members of the North Korean government and other attendees how to use cutting-edge blockchain and cryptocurrencies to bypass sanctions and launder money.

Cao de Benos, 47, and Emms, 30, face up to 20 years in prison if proven guilty.

In April 2022, Griffith was sentenced to 63 months in prison and fined $100,000 after pleading guilty to a conspiracy charge.
