Here are the stock market’s trading hours for Thanksgiving and Black Friday

U.S. financial markets are closed Thursday for Thanksgiving, and will close early on Black Friday.

Black Friday, Nov. 26, is the official start to the holiday shopping season, with many retailers — including Macy’s Inc. M, -4.53% and Walmart WMT, 0.34% — offering bargains for those looking for holiday gifts.

The Intercontinental Exchange Inc. ICE, 0.39% -owned New York Stock Exchange and the Nasdaq NDAQ, 0.29% will close at 1 p.m. Eastern on Friday, while the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association recommends a 2 p.m. Eastern close for Treasury markets, such as those that trade the 10-year Treasury TMUBMUSD10Y, 1.641%. However, there’s no early closure for the markets on Wednesday, the day before Thanksgiving in the U.S.

The dearth of volume around the holiday makes sense, given that Thanksgiving is typically the busiest travel day of the year.

Collins Dictionary picks NFT as word of the year for 2021

Collins Dictionary has chosen the term NFT as its word of the year after surging interest in the digital tokens that can sell for millions of dollars brought it into the mainstream.

NFT is short for non-fungible token. Collins defines it as “a unique digital certificate, registered in a blockchain, that is used to record ownership of an asset such as an artwork or a collectible.”

Most people didn’t know what an NFT was until this year, when sales boomed, sparked in large part by artist Beeple’s March auction of a digital collage NFT for nearly $70 million. Other highlights include Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey selling an NFT of his first tweet for $2.9 million and electronic musician Grimes selling $6 million worth for her digital art.

Samsung to Unveil Plans for $17 Billion Texas Chip-Making Plant

Samsung Electronics is expected to announce plans to invest $17 billion to build a chip factory in Texas, according to several media reports.

It would provide a boost to President Joe Biden’s ambition to increase domestic semiconductor production to shield the U.S. from the vagaries of the global market.

If confirmed, the plant would be based in Taylor, in central Texas, and would generate around 1,800 jobs, with production to start in 2024.

Samsung and Texas Gov. Greg Abbott are due to formally announce the Korean group’s decision Tuesday afternoon, according to some reports, although another report said that Samsung was yet to make a final decision on the location.

ECB Publishes New Oversight Framework

The European Central Bank (ECB) has published a new oversight model for the PISA framework that covers electronic payment instruments, schemes and arrangements, aiming to introduce more safety and efficiency into the current and future payments ecosystem. The latest move complements the European Union’s forthcoming regulations on crypto assets, including stablecoins, and international standards for global stablecoins, the bank said.

“The retail payments ecosystem is evolving fast owing to innovation and technological change. This calls for a forward-looking approach in overseeing digital payment solutions,” Fabio Panetta, Executive Board member at the ECB, as quoted in the statement.

A growing number of fund managers and institutional investors now prefer bitcoin over gold.
