The true importance of tropical forests:

- Rainforests help regulate our climate and provide us with everyday products.

- Rainforests absorb massive amounts of solar radiation, helping regulate temperatures around the globe.

- Rainforests also provide us with many medicinal products. According to the U.S. National Cancer Institute, 70% of plants useful in the treatment of cancer are found only in rainforests.

- Rainforest plants are also used in the creation of muscle relaxants, steroids, and insecticides. They are used to treat asthma, arthritis, malaria, heart disease, and pneumonia. (National Geographic)

Have you ever visited a rainforest?
Imagine an area of tall, evergreen trees and a high amount of rainfall. They are incredibly diverse and complex ecosystems, home to more than half of the world’s plant and animal species.

Where can you find one?
They cover just 6% of Earth’s surface but you can find them on all continents except Antarctica. However, the largest and densest of them surround the Amazon River in South America and the Congo River in Africa.

Experts estimate that as much as 1.02 billion tons of carbon dioxide are being released annually from degraded coastal ecosystems, which is equivalent to 19% of emissions from tropical deforestation globally (Blue Carbon Initiative)

What role does Blue Carbon play in this process?
Sea grasses, mangroves, and salt marshes along our coast "capture and hold" carbon, acting as something called a carbon sink, preventing this carbon from reaching the atmosphere.

The carbon found in these ecosystems is usually thousands of years old.
