PayPal’s cross-border remittance service, Xoom, partnered with Visa Direct to allow debit card holders to receive funds within minutes.

Financial technology firm PayPal’s international money transfer service, Xoom, has announced a new product that lets users in the United States send money directly to Visa debit card users.

In a recent announcement, PayPal mentioned that Xoom partnered with financial services firm Visa, allowing debit card holders to receive funds directly from Xoom. The feature is available in 25 countries, including the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Ukraine and Vietnam.

With the newly-launched function, users can access the funds within minutes, eliminating the need to wait for five business days, which is the average waiting time for wire transfers.

Wei-Lin Lee, PayPal’s vice president of remittances, said that the new service could help people during winter and holidays. Lee explained that many customers were sending money globally to their friends and family during those times and that this needed to be done quickly. The executive believes that the newly-expanded service will help users across the globe.

Visa Direct North America head, Yanilsa Gonzalez-Ore, recognized an increased demand for “digital solutions that help remove barriers” for people looking to send money globally. The executive believes that the new solution will be helpful in this regard.

Meanwhile, PayPal has been increasingly covering all fronts regarding financial transactions. Besides enhancing product offerings in cross-border transactions, the company has also embraced cryptocurrency. As one of the world’s pioneers in adopting its own central bank digital currency (CBDC), Nigeria declares its readiness to accept the existence of private stablecoins as well. The necessity to create a legal framework for stablecoins is marked in the latest central bank strategy paper.

Published under the headline “Nigeria Payments System Vision 2025”, the 83-page report from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) considers the development of a regulatory framework for the potential implementation of a stablecoin. According to the document, there is a need to develop a framework, given that stablecoins are likely to become a successful payment mechanism in the country.

The report also pays attention to the regulation of initial coin offerings (ICOs). It highlights the current absence of regulation in the area, causing the investors’ losses. However, the CBN sees potential for adopting ICOs as a new approach to fundraising for capital projects, peer-to-peer lending and crowdfunding. Hence, a regulatory framework is also needed “in the event of adoption of an ICO-based investment solution.”

However, the stablecoins and ICOs segment of the report is ways smaller than the one dedicated to Nigerian CBDC, eNaira. The Central Bank considers it a potential “enabler for transformation” in the national economy. It hopes to achieve a final implementation of the currency in 3-5 years.

In December 2022, Nigeria has reduced the amount of cash individuals and businesses can withdraw to $225 and $1,125 per week, respectively in an attempt to push its “cash-less Nigeria” policy and increase the use of the eNaira.

Adoption rates for a CBDC have been low since its launch in 2021. As reported by Cointelegraph, the CBN has struggled to convince its citizens to use the digital currency, with less than 0.5% of the population reported having used the eNaira as of Oct. 25, 2022, a year from its launch. At an FTX bankruptcy court hearing in Delaware on January 4, Seth Shapiro, an attorney with the US Department of Justice (DOJ), stated that the US government is in the process of taking 56 million shares of Robinhood Markets. The shares are worth approximately $460 million and are linked to FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried (SBF).

According to a filing by Robinhood with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in May of last year, Bankman-Fried was the company's sole director and majority owner, and Emergent Fidelity Technologies purchased a 7.6% stake in the company.
