Metis is an Ethereum layer-2 scaling solution based on optimistic rollups. The protocol is a fork of Optimism with some noteable improvements.

Foreword:
High fees on the Ethereum network were the main driversof the growth of rival ecosystems like Solana and Avalanche. I think, the evasion to other L1s is a bad solution and will not last. Ethereum has still the highest amount of TVL, applications build upon, developers in the ecosystem and is the furthest decentralized. We saw a lot of so-called "Ethereum Killers" over the years, from EOS to Cardano and beyond, none of them has showed anything to justify their existence up to this date. Ethereum is and will be the No. 1 smart contract platform.
Another tried solution was the relocation of traffic to sidechains like xDai or Polygon, which greatly improved speed and reduced fees but sacrificed security. For example, Polygon is secured through an 8-party multisig, which is a joke and quite the opposite of decentralization.

It is now clear that the only viable solution to Ethereum scaling is a Layer-2 solution (from here on reffered to as L2). L2s provide the holy trinity of sustainable scaling: decentralisation, speed, security. These L2 solutions function through so-called "rollups", where a batch of transactions gets bundled together and then written to the underlying blockchain (Ethereum) as one transaction. This improves speed by 100x, reduces fees substantially and minimizes security and decentralization trade-offs.

There are 2 forms of rollups, "optimistic" rollups and ZK-rollups (based on zero-knowledge proofs), i exepct the final form of L2-scaling to be in the form of EVM-compatible ZK-rollups. But this is a process that spans over a long period of time and for now we need optimistic rollups. The two dominant players are Optimism and Arbitrum (which launched recently btw).
I expect both to present a native token in the future (they denied it till now, but we will see), because they need to decentralize the protocol at some point and onboard users. But this is another story, bottomline is: there are several very interesting investment opportunities in L2 protocols at the moment. One of them is Metis.

Why is Metis interesting?
Metis is a fork of Optimism, with some key differences. First and foremost, it has a token. Which is an integral part in onboarding TVL. Other then that, it has IPFS (Interplanetary File System) integrated and, now comes the interesting part, it has multiple sequencers which drastically shortens the validation times. Let me explain that further, every optimistic-based L2 relies on so-called "sequencers", these are entities that order and batch transactions before they are submitted to the underlying L1 (Ethereum). Optimism and Arbitrum have one sequencer whereas Metis intends to launch with multiple sequencers. The protocol works with a pool of sequencers which are incentivized through a staking mechanism (DBT). This is particularly interesting, because whenever a withdrawal to the L1 is requested, there is a waiting time. The term "optimistic" derives from the fact that the protocols assume that every tx in a batch is correct, they are optimistic. When a withdrawal is request, all of them will be checked to ensure fraud protection.
Optimism withdrawals take 1 week for this process, Arbitrum states a treshold of 3 days, where withdrawals with Metis can be done in a couple of hours, due to the protocol architecture with multiple sequencers. This is the unique selling point of Metis.
