2022-04-16 09:01:02 US Officials Tie North Korea’s ‘Lazarus’ Hackers to $625M Crypto Theft

Axie Infinity’s Ronin blockchain suffered a massive exploit late last month.The U.S. Treasury Department alleged that North Korean hacking group Lazarus is tied to a more than $600 million theft of cryptocurrency from the Axie Infinity-linked Ronin bridge.

The Treasury Department added an Ethereum address to its sanctions list on Thursday. Wallet profiler Nansen had labeled the sanctioned address as a “Ronin Bridge Exploiter” when checked by CoinDesk Thursday. It held 148,000 ETH at publication time. CoinDesk independently confirmed that the wallet is tied to the Ronin exploit.

The Ethereum 2.0 upgrade that will see the network switch to proof of stake will come ‘in the few months after’ June, according to devs.The Ethereum merge that forms a key part of the so-called Ethereum 2.0 upgrade has been delayed until the latter half of 2022.

“It won’t be June, but likely in the few months after,” Tim Beiko, an Ethereum Foundation developer, said yesterday on Twitter. “No firm date yet, but we’re definitely in the final chapter of PoW on Ethereum.”Earlier in the Twitter thread, Beiko had urged a user not to invest in any more mining equipment.

Sky Mavis has offered a top prize of $1,000,000 for hackers who can identify “extraordinarily severe” vulnerabilities.Sky Mavis, the developer behind play-to-earn game Axie Infinity, has launched a bug bounty program after hackers drained $622 million in crypto from the company’s Ethereum sidechain, Ronin, last month.

The developer is offering bounties of up to $1 million to “encourage responsible disclosure of security vulnerabilities.”“Calling all white hats in the blockchain space” tweeted the company’s Chief Operating Officer, Aleksander Leonard Larsen. “Help us keep @Ronin_Network secure while earning a bounty.” Larsen linked to a page with details of the Sky Mavis Bug Bounty Program.
