Tezos has activated its thirteenth core protocol upgrade, Mumbai, which includes Smart Rollups, a new Layer 2 scaling solution built into the protocol that enables the blockchain to handle more than one million transactions per second without sacrificing decentralization. The upgrade also reduces network latency, includes updates to existing features, and allows developers to build on Tezos using general-purpose programming languages. Mumbai was validated and approved by the Tezos blockchain community's on-chain governance process and was the result of months of collaboration among developer teams and the Tezos community.
