A Latvian developer and artist identified as Ilya Borisov is facing up to 12 years in prison after authorities claimed that his non-fungible tokens (NFT) earnings of €8.7 million are proceeds of money laundering and crime on a large scale. In the case timeline, the developer who earned the amount from 3,557 NFT releases.

He paid the taxes after the agency advised him to register as a “self-employed person” and pay taxes on the amount withdrawn in euros.Through his lawyer, Borisov managed to challenge the freezing of his bank account, and the court granted him orders to access the money on June 30. Borisov, a former employee of Meduza, a news website, stressed that none of the prosecutors had made an effort to contact him regarding the process. The developer has since appealed the decision but he anticipates more delays due to the bureaucratic system.

Uniswap is diving deep down the NFT rabbithole. The automated market maker is integrating decentralized NFT marketplace Sudoswap to allow for efficient NFT swaps when it launches its NFT platform. The news was shared by Scott Gray, head of NFT product at Uniswap Labs.

Sudoswap’s automated market maker sudoAMM was released on July 8. Automated market makers allow digital assets to be traded automatically using liquidity pools rather than a traditional marketplace that needs to match buyers with sellers. With Uniswap’s integration of sudoAMM, Uniswap is doubling down on NFTs. Last month, it acquired NFT aggregator Genie. Sudoswap also plans to support ERC-1155 tokens, ERC-20 token routing, and more novel bonding curves and AMM management infrastructure in the future.

Microsoft has been found to be the company with the largest number of patents related to the metaverse. It was followed by Samsung Electronics. Microsoft and Samsung own 158 and 122 patents on the metaverse, respectively, according to IALE Technology, a Spanish consulting firm. The metaverse refers to a virtual world based on virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) technologies.

The two companies were followed by Magic Leap, IBM, Disney, Meta (formerly known as Facebook), Adobe, Verizon, Intel and Snap.The top 10 companies are concentrating their efforts on securing patents for VR and AR, 3D projection, holograms and neural network models, IALE Technology said.Metaverse-related patent applications have doubled to more than 2,000 over the past five years, IALE Technology said. Samsung Space Tycoon, a virtual space introduced by Samsung Electronics on the metaverse platform Roblox.

One of the most successful video game series of all time is set to receive the NFT treatment in 2023, as Japanese publisher Square Enix has partnered with blockchain gaming firm Enjin to release NFTs based on the Final Fantasy franchise. Square Enix will first release packs of physical trading cards in spring 2023.

In November 2023, the publisher will release a limited edition action figure of the game’s star, Cloud Strife. Both the standard figure and “Digital Plus Edition” will come with a code to redeem an NFT certificate of authenticity, but only the latter comes with an additional NFT: a digital replica of the physical toy. The standard figure will sell for $130, with the Digital Plus Edition at $160. Enjin CTO Witek Radomski told Decrypt that the firm first worked with Square Enix several years ago, hosting websites for online guilds that play Final Fantasy XIV.

Given the ability of the metaverse and non-fungible tokens (NFTs) to offer new and interactive avenues for companies to connect with consumers, more firms continue to warm to the sector with the intent to launch different products. The NFT application filed on July 14 indicates that L.G. plans to offer T.V. software for issuing and trading NFTs, software for NFT and crypto transactions, digital token brokerage, and wealth management.

According to the application before the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), LG also plans to provide e-wallet payment services and software for exchanging electronic money in the metaverse. The application comes after L.G. had initially released various products around the NFT sector. In May, the company indicated that it was working with new media artist Refik Anadol to display NFT artwork on the company’s transparent OLED TVs.
