The metaverse is seen by many companies as a great business opportunity and for new ways of working. Security provider Trend Micro, however, warns in a recent research report that cyber criminals could misuse the technology for their own purposes.

Security researchers predict that a kind of darknet structure could emerge there, similar to today's Internet. The machinations of the cyber gangsters could even take place in protected rooms that can only be reached from a specific physical location and via valid authentication tokens. This would make their underground marketplaces inaccessible to law enforcement agencies.

As far as the Eminem/Snoop Dogg performance goes, MTV announced that it’s partnered with Yuga Labs “to bring this creative to life.” Yuga is the company behind Bored Ape Yacht Club, the NFTs being awkwardly shilled by Jimmy Fallon and Paris Hilton (among other shameless celebrities).

For what it’s worth, Yuga Labs is also embroiled in a lawsuit with artist Ryder Ripps, who has accused its creators of embedding their NFTs with racist imagery originating from alt-right forums like 4chan. Ripps recently filed an anti-SLAPP motion in the suit, which read in part that “Yuga’s systematic use of racist and neo-Nazi messages and imagery appears to be by deliberate design, and, by its co-founder’s admission are not ‘just random,’”.

The Beijing municipal government on Tuesday announced a two-year (2022–2024) Metaverse innovation and development plan that would require all districts to adhere to the newly released Web3 innovation plan.

The development action plan refers to the Metaverse as a new generation of information technology integration and innovation that would drive the growth of the internet toward Web3. The innovation plan focuses on promoting the development of Metaverse-related industries and helping Beijing build a benchmark city for the digital economy. The action plan demands that various districts build technological infrastructure at a city level and promote its use in various fields, including education and tourism.

The Pudgy Penguins are pumping. First launched back in June 2021, the Ethereum NFT collection often referred to as the “Pudgys” is starting to see some of its long-term efforts pay off. The minimum purchase price, or floor price, for a Pudgy Penguin PFP NFT has spiked 83% in the past two weeks and 69% over the past month, according to data from NFTPriceFloor.

To expand its brand presence, the collection has had plans for physical plush toys and a children’s book for a while. But the results of Netz’s work are starting to materialize. Earlier this month, the NFT collection announced the specific Penguin PFPs chosen for its line of “Pudgy Toys” and launched its own marketplace for Pudgy NFTs. But there won’t just be plush toys—Netz said the upcoming toy line will be “diverse.”

The NFT craze of 2021 swept across almost every industry and made non-fungible tokens a household name across the globe, making NFTs, which were once reserved only for a small niche of crypto enthusiasts, catch the eyes of legacy brands that joined in on the craze. After buying sought-after NFT collections like the BAYC or Cryptopunks.

According to data from Dune Analytics, out of all the brands that issued NFT collections on Ethereum, Nike ranked the highest with total revenue of $185.27 million. Nike pocketed $93.10 million from the primary sale of its NFTs and another $92.17 million from royalties. The Cryptokicks collection saw over 67,250 transactions on the secondary market and recorded $1.29 billion in secondary volume, almost tenfold what its competitor Adidas recorded.

Global asset management firm Invesco has launched an investment fund focused on all things Metaverse. The Invesco Metaverse Fund is registered in Luxembourg and has a size of approximately $30 million, a spokesman for Invesco told Decrypt. The Metaverse refers to an integrated network of immersive 3D worlds and online communities where people interact by using virtual reality headsets and augmented forms of reality.

The fund invests in large, medium, and small-cap companies across the Metaverse Value Chain, which, according to marketing materials shared with Decrypt, “encompasses many distinct and interrelated sectors that help facilitate, create, or benefit from the growth of immersive virtual worlds.”. Citing a PWC December 2020 report that estimates that virtual and augmented reality have the potential to add $1.5 trillion to the global economy.

For a brief, shining moment Sunday morning, the CryptoPunks flipped the Bored Ape Yacht Club, the floor price of the veteran NFT collection topping that of the celebrity-coveted primates for the first time since March, according to NFT Price Floor.

The CryptoPunks were created by Canadian software developers Matt Hall and John Watkinson of Larva Labs in June 2017. The collection of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) on the Ethereum blockchain is widely credited with sparking the NFT craze, inspiring the ERC-721 standard as well as prominent collections that followed—including the Bored Ape Yacht Club, which launched in April 2021. The Apes quickly captured the attention of celebrities, making ownership an A-List status symbol. By the end of the year, the floor price for a BAYC NFT flipped that of the CryptoPunks.
