2022-06-10 14:40:04 ‘Father’ of the Metaverse Neal Stephenson launching metaverse blockchain

At LAMINA1, Neal Stephenson will focus on “helping get artists and other value creators paid properly for their work, helping the environment [...] and seeing a truly open Metaverse get built,” noted co-founder Peter Vessenes. Neal Stephenson, the author who coined the term “Metaverse” 30 years ago, is launching a metaverse-focused blockchain project called LAMINA1.

He has also revised his vision for the Metaverse, stating that the experience is likely to be geared more toward flat 2D screens rather than virtual reality or augmented reality tech such as headsets and lenses, as in the model proposed by Meta and Microsoft. Stephenson is a popular speculative fiction author who explored the concept of a virtual reality world called the Metaverse in his sci-fi novel Snow Crash in 1992. Outside of writing, the 62-year-old also served as the chief futurist for an augmented reality (AR).

This week, Budweiser announced plans to put the brand’s famed Clydesdale horses from past advertising campaigns into the Ethereum-based NFT horse racing game Zed Run. The game previously inked an alliance with beer brand Stella Artois, which like Budweiser is owned by Anheuser-Busch InBev. Zed Run requires users to own an NFT racehorse to play.

The South Korean science and ICT ministry has said it will recruit companies that will participate in its 2022 Metaverse Content Creation Project. A director in the ministry said the project is being promoted as part of the country’s industry-leading metaverse strategy.

South Korea’s Ministry of Science and ICT in conjunction with the National Information and Communication Industry Promotion Agency (NIPA) has said it will recruit companies that will be participating in the 2022 Metaverse Content Creation Project. Through the project, South Korea intends to support local metaverse content makers as well as the issuance of non-fungible tokens (NFTs). According to a report in the Korean language publication News 1, the goal of the project is to engender trust in the metaverse content creation ecosystem.

The Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) of Hong Kong recently issued a statement on the financial and legal risks surrounding non-fungible tokens (NFTs). It claims that such tokens are not only prone to the typical security vulnerabilities of crypto, but could also constitute financial assets bound by SFC regulation.

According to the regulator’s statement on Monday, NFTs “generally” do not fall under the SFC’s regulatory purview. These include NFTs created as “genuine” digital representations of collectibles, such as digital images, artwork, music, and videos. However, the commission claims that there are other NFTs that “cross the boundary” between collectibles and financial assets. Some, for example, are “fractionalized” or “fungible”, causing them to resemble securities and/or collective investment schemes (CIS).

According to a report by NBC News, the 19-year-old first achived mainstream fame after his physical artworks and NFTs were sold for $2.16 million at auction house in New York. The collection, which was titled “Hello, i’m Victor (FEWOCiOUS) and This is My Life” explored Victor’s childhood and gender transition.

Langlois has gone on to make several more high profile sales in NFT art, including selling nearly $20 million worth of digital art in 24 hours back in April. The report says the sale represented the third-largest in history for NFT marketplace Nifty Gateway. According to NBC’s report, Langlois’s first NFT collection focused on his life from ages 14 to 18, including his experience being removed from an abusive household and living with his grandparents in las Vegas. Langlois said at the time he was afraid to come out as transgender to religious family members.

The NFTs have collectively generated more than $2.1 billion in secondary market trading volume to date.
