2021-05-11 05:37:45 Pulled the trigger. My 401(k) just became Bitcoin.

Did you know you can take out up to half of your 401(k) (or 403(b) if working for a charity) as a loan (which you pay back to yourself with interest)?

I finally filled out the paperwork, worked through the transfers, and turned half my retirement into cryptocurrency. I now have to make monthly repayments into my retirement, so it's sort of a forced savings plan with the benefit of frontloading my BTC growth. (I actually got in on some of that sweet DIP!)

Thank you, Joe Biden and the Child Tax Credit that will be paying my loan back.

2021-05-11 03:37:34 Is Smaug the Hero we all Deserve?

Was Smaug misunderstood and just limiting the available gold supply as a consequence of dwarf overmining maybe there wasn’t enough GDP in middle earth to justify the gold supply and the scarcity that Smaug provides created a more industrious economy and in turn he would let some gold leak out in proportion. Smaug is the perfect gatekeeper of gold because he only likes the conductive property of it to warm his scales versus being a corruptible man.

2021-05-10 22:37:44 Dad lost 1.5K BTC bought around 2011 - I'm trying to help retrieve it and need your help

Hi Reddit,

My dad Bought around 1500 BTC back in 2011.

He got a tip from a colleague and didn't hesitate to try it out.

He bought it with his e-mail from the company he used to work at (CISCO), at the time and doesn't remember which wallet he used (probably limited wallet options at that time).

He left the company around 2013 and his e-mail etc. from his time in the company has probably been deleted for the better part of 6-7 years.

Is there any chance or just the smallest of hope of retrieving his wallet, or is it just bad luck/stupidity from my dad?

I hope you can help and let me know if I need to pursue this.

Cheers.

2021-05-10 21:37:39 How to not get your exchange account hacked. NOOBS READ THIS

I wrote this originally for the Coinbase subreddit since I saw so many people getting their account hacked. If you have over $10k on an exchange or any amount you can't afford to lose, do ALL of these steps. To be honest, all of this is just the bare minimum. I've been trading and using cryptocurrency since 2017, I work in IT and have taken classes in cybersecurity. I am nowhere near an expert but I feel that I know a lot about this. Feel free to add anything I missed below.

How to not get hacked:

1. Have a strong unique password, don't keep it out in the open.

\-More than 16 characters, containing numbers, symbols, and capitals.

\-If you use a password manager, secure it as well. I recommend Bitwarden.

2. Have google authenticator as your 2FA.

\-Store your backup seed on a thumb drive or on paper in a secure location (in case your phone gets lost). DON'T STORE IT ANYWHERE ELSE.

\-Don't use your phone number, and don't use Authy. It can be hacked if someone swaps your sim card.

3. Secure your email with a strong password and 2FA (google auth) as well.

\-Use all these rules for it too.

4. Have a separate email that you use for only crypto and banking.

\-One for everything else.

\-If your info gets leaked in a data breach for Facebook for instance, the email you used for it is known to hackers but the one you use for your exchange is not.

5. Install Phishfort on your browser.

\-It will help protect you against fake websites that steal your info.

6. Use anti-virus software on your pc and scan your phone for malicious apps.

\-Do a quick scan at least once a week and a full scan once a month.

\-Malwarebytes has a great free virus scan but it does not run automatically.

7. Do not give your password or any code sent to your device to ANYONE.

\-No one from the exchange will ask you for it.

Thanks for reading, hope this valuable info serves you well.
