2022-04-15 22:31:38 Biden to appoint former Ripple adviser as Fed vice chair for supervision

Michael Barr, a former advisor to Ripple from 2015 to 2017, has been selected by President Biden to be the next vice chair for supervision of the Federal Reserve, according to the White House.

"Barr understands that this job is not a partisan one, but one that plays a critical role in regulating our nation’s financial institutions to ensure Americans are treated fairly and to protect the stability of our economy," said Biden.

Barr also served as the Treasury Department’s assistant secretary for financial institutions under Barack Obama and taught courses on financial regulation at the University of Michigan.

Ripple is still in a legal battle with the SEC that began in December 2020. The SEC alleges Ripple conducted an illegal securities offering through sales of XRP. CEO Brad Garlinghouse recently said that things went "exceedingly well," predicting that the outcome will be favorable for Ripple.

Crypto exchange Binance has reportedly chosen Turkey as a pilot country for its new customer service center. Binance will provide its Turkish customers with 24/7 customer support through its app.

A possible reason why Binance chose Turkey is the high volume of traffic that the exchange receives from this country. According to Similarweb, Turkey accounts for over 7% of desktop browser access to the main Binance platform.

The exchange will expand the service globally if the pilot test in Turkey becomes successful.

2022-04-15 15:23:11 Portugal grants first crypto license to its bank

The Central Bank of Portugal has granted Bison Bank a license to act as the first crypto bank in the country. The bank was formerly the investment bank of Banif which was acquired by the Chinese group Bison in 2018.

Bison Bank received authorization to launch Bison Digital Assets, a special company that will provide custodial and exchange crypto services.

Customers will reportedly be offered a "new and broader set of products and services that, in line with market demand trends in this new segment, match their global needs present in financial and virtual assets."

Under regulation by the Banco de Portugal, Bison Digital Assets will be supervised on anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing grounds.

The developers of non-custodial wallet MetaMask, which has more than 30 million monthly active users, announced support for Bitcoin using the Snaps program.

According to MetaMask’s Developer Documentation, Snaps is a system that runs in an isolated environment and allows anyone to safely expand the capabilities of MetaMask. It can add new APIs to MetaMask, add support for different blockchain protocols, or modify existing functionality using internal APIs.

Earlier in March, Consencys CEO Joseph Lubin revealed that MetaMask would launch its own token and a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) that would fund the development of the project.

Lazarus Group, a cybercrime group run by the North Korean government, has been linked to the $625 million Ronin Network hack, according to Chainalysis.

The US Department of the Treasury’s list of the Specially Designated Nationals and Blocked Persons (SDN) now includes the Ethereum address that was involved in the security breach.

The aforementioned address received 173,600 ETH and 25.5 million USDC tokens.
