Recession worries and inflation are taking their toll on Black Friday, but the shopping holiday was still expected to top $9 billion in online sales for the first time after initial results were tabulated.

Americans will spend between $942.6 billion and $960.4 billion this holiday season, an increase of between 6% and 8% from $889.3 billion last year, according to projections from the National Retail Federation.

“This year, 18% of holiday shoppers have completed at least half of their holiday shopping. While this is on par with last year, it is up from only 11% a decade ago.”

Stocks will start the Black Friday half-session near 10-week highs, having rebounded partly on hopes the Federal Reserve will be slowing the pace of interest rate rises as it waits to see how much previous tightening has impacted the economy.

Investors are thus looking ahead to when the Fed eventually pivots and borrowing costs can start coming down again. For now, they are displaying few concerns about how much damage any economic slowdown may do to corporate earnings.

In the second phase, investors start calculating the economic and company earnings consequences of the ongoing rises in interest rates…”and then the third phase is everyone throws in the towel. No one wants to own a stock again, and that’s your bottom and that’s when you need to be buying stocks hand over fist.”

As of early Friday, it seems Americans were eager to turn from turkey to bargain hunting. Americans spent a record $5.29 billion on Thursday according to Adobe, mostly on their phones: Mobile shopping accounted for 55% of sales - another record.

Black Friday is no longer a single day, but an event that stretches from Thanksgiving to Cyber Monday. The stakes are high, so investors will want to know if Santa splurging or skimping.

After several attempts this month the S&P 500 SPX, +1.36% has finally managed to close above the 4,000 level. Happy Thanksgiving! Bulls will now want to see that barrier become support and will be eyeing the next hurdle, the 200-day moving average, currently around 4,062.

But for the market to extend its rally into next year, at least one of two things will probably need to happen. Corporate earnings will have to rise or the multiple applied to earnings will have to increase. The latter may occur if investors become more optimistic, say, in anticipation of a Fed pivot.

With markets shut on Thursday for Thanksgiving and everyone apparently going shopping on Friday, it seems all the week’s economic data has been crammed into Wednesday. So, taking a deep breath…here goes….

Analysts have described 2022 as “the worst year in the euro’s history”. However, the euro’s relevance has been in decline for the last two decades. Its share of global official holdings of foreign exchange reserves was 20.6% at the end of 2021, down from around 25% in 2003.

One of the key drivers of the euro’s depreciation against the dollar in 2022 has been the widening of the monetary policy gap between the Federal Reserve and the ECB.

If we are confronted with another major real shock of the euro, like those already mentioned, we could still experience an 8-12% decline in real terms.

Given that we are already in an inflationary period, further euro depreciation could result in higher inflation, with dire economic consequences.
