2022-09-02 13:32:02 A16z Creates NFT Licensing Framework to Standardize Collectors’ Rights

Venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz’ crypto arm, a16z, released six NFT-specific copyright licensing frameworks on Wednesday as part of a free and public set of “Can’t Be Evil” Licenses, in the style of Creative Commons. A blog post from Miles Jennings, general counsel at a16z, and Chris Dixon, a managing partner who founded a16z.

The “Can’t Be Evil” set is meant to serve as a template for NFT projects to consider when creating and selling NFTs, according to its Terms and Conditions. The slate of open source licenses are based on US law and relate to copyright only, excluding other forms of intellectual property, including personality rights, stated the document. US copyright laws do not automatically grant buyers of both traditional and digital assets the right to reproduce, adapt or publicly display the artwork without a license.

Royalty payments have become a cornerstone of the growing non-fungible token (NFT) industry, allowing artists to make money when people resell their work, venues to capture revenue on secondary marketplaces for NFT tickets and musicians to subvert streaming services in favor of more lucrative, blockchain-driven products.

But there’s a problem: Royalty payments are only enforceable on a marketplace level, and not on-chain. An NFT buyer, for example, could send ether (ETH) to a designated wallet after making an off-chain agreement to buy their NFT, and the seller could send them that NFT with no marketplace as a middleman for the transaction, paying no royalty fees in the process.

Digital avatar startup Genies, known its for high-profile partnerships with celebrities such as Justin Bieber, Migos and Cardi B, has just released its long-anticipated NFT storefront, “The Warehouse.” Genies last earned a $1 billion valuation from heavy-hitting tech investors including Silver Lake and Mary Meeker’s.

The Los Angeles-based company partnered with NBA Top Shot NFT creator Dapper Labs to develop the storefront on Dapper’s Flow blockchain and debuted it to a group of invite-only beta users in December last year, TechCrunch reported at the time. Now, The Warehouse is available to the general public, meaning users can download the Genies Studio app to create their own avatars and buy digital fashion items to dress them, Genies CEO and founder Akash Nigam told TechCrunch in an interview.

According to a recent blog post, 0xfanfaron, CEO of nonfungible tokens (NFTs) gaming project Ragnarok, apologized publicly for his missteps in leading the company. Ragnark is a crypto startup that brought in $15.5 million worth of Ether for gaming development in April through its first-ever NFT sale.

0xfanfaron further elaborated that he sold the firm's Ether positions through a series of trades with the plan to reinvest at a "better time." The venture led to $1.827 million in realized losses. Among Ragnarok's other expenses during that time were $1.9 million paid for outsourcing development work and $6.9 million in salaries and compensation to team members. 0xfanfaron vouched he will be "compensating the Ragnarok treasury for all trading losses."

2022-08-30 10:02:04 A key leader for Meta’s metaverse software is leaving the company

The vice president of Meta’s Horizon social media virtual reality software, Vivek Sharma, is leaving the company, a spokesperson said Friday. Sharma has been with Facebook parent Meta for the past six years, holding high-ranking positions in marketplace and gaming, and most recently its nascent metaverse-related business unit.

As VP of Horizon, Sharma, who is based in the Seattle area, oversaw various VR projects such as the Horizon Worlds social media service, which is akin to the online game Second Life that’s been retrofitted to virtual reality. Other Horizon products include the VR-based workplace collaboration app Horizon Workrooms, and the Horizon Venues app for live events, which was moved into the core Worlds app this summer. The spokesperson added that the Horizon team will now directly report to Vishal Shah, Meta’s VP of the Metaverse.

Faith-based virtual reality spaces are allowing users to pilgrimage to and explore some of the holiest cities, experience rituals, pray and worship in the metaverse. In 2015, the chief executive of the digital agency, Ehab Fares, created some of Islam's most sacred sites including Mecca in a metaverse they named Experience Makkah.

The Holy City, also invented in 2015, allows pilgrims to follow Orthodox clerics as they emerge from the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in the Holy Fire ceremony, let them tuck a prayer note into a crack of the Western Wall, or follow the steps of thousands of worshippers during Ramadan at the Al-Aqsa Mosque. This spring, students at the University of Miami walked into a Haitian Voodoo ceremony, a Hindu funeral rite and a Christian baptism through the metaverse during a course called Religion and Sacred Spaces in the Era of Virtual Reality and Artificial Intelligence.
