Polygon (MATIC) is leading gains among the top 20 largest cryptocurrencies by market capitalization over the past week. MATIC, the coin powering the Ethereum scaling network Polygon, has jumped 10.5% over the past week.

As of this writing, MATIC trades at around $0.8941, up 7.3% over the past 24 hours, per data from CoinMarketCap. MATIC short trades worth $7.4 million have been liquidated over the past week, too, per data from Coinglass. Long positions worth $5.1 million were liquidated over the same period. The cryptocurrency market continues to bleed out as its capitalization drops to $950 billion. Meanwhile, extreme fear is once again the predominant sentiment. The cryptocurrency market continues to struggle, with its total capitalization shedding another $50 billion over the past 24 hours.

Bitcoin shed another percent off its dollar value in the past 24 hours and dropped to a low of around $19,520 (on Binance). As seen in the chart above, the price has now recovered to about $19,900, but the cryptocurrency is still done some 6.5% in the past week. It’s also worth noting, though, that BTC’s dominance – the metric commonly used to gauge its performance relative to that of the rest of the market – increased a bit in the past 24 hours. Recent estimates give September 19 as the date the Merge will occur. The highly anticipated event will combine the existing Proof-of-Work (PoW) settlement layer with the Proof-of-Stake (PoS) Beacon Chain – thereby eliminating the need for miners to validate transactions and uphold the system.

The Ethereum protocol will become more energy efficient, with a 99.95% energy consumption reduction. Advocates also say the Merge will improve efficiency and scalability and bring a deflationary aspect through reduced token issuance. In the run-up to the event, Analyst Miles Deutscher identified four variables that could impact the Merge. These are the possibility of delay, the ramifications of a PoW fork, the censorship resistance of the PoS chain, especially in light of the Tornado Cash sanctions, and the staking yield after merging.
