2022-05-17 18:54:53 China makes comeback in Bitcoin mining despite government ban

While the US extended its leading position as the dominant location for Bitcoin mining, China has reemerged as the second-largest locale despite a government ban on the activity last year.

The US accounted for 37.84 percent of global hashrate, a measure of computing power used to extract the digital currency, between September 2021 to January.

Following the mining ban in China last year, the country has seen a sudden surge in activity through “covert mining operations and has “re-emerged” as a major mining hub grabbing 21.11 percent of global hashrate, according to the CCAF.

“This strongly suggests that significant underground mining activity has formed in the country, which empirically confirms what industry insiders have long been assuming,” CCAF wrote in the report.

Cryptocurrency exchange FTX’s founder Sam Bankman-Fried has said that bitcoin has no future as a payments network and criticised the digital currency for its inefficiency and high environmental costs, the Financial Times reported on Monday.

“Proof of stake networks will be required to evolve crypto as a payments network as they are cheaper and less power hungry. I don’t believe bitcoin has to go as a cryptocurrency, and it may still have a future as an asset, a commodity and a store of value such as gold,” Bankman-Fried added.

Bitcoin touched its lowest since December 2020 last week, after the collapse of the stablecoin TerraUSD.

2022-05-11 11:53:57 Coinbase CEO blames India’s central bank for halting trading operations

Coinbase, which ventured into and subsequently shut down trading services in India last month, has blamed the country’s central bank and government for the closure. In an earnings call on May 10, the company’s chief executive officer (CEO) Brian Armstrong said that the country’s authorities are applying “soft pressure” in order to discourage crypto trading within its borders.

The US-based publicly listed crypto exchange had started operations in India, amid much fanfare, on April 7. The company allowed users to deposit money on its platform using the country’s unified payments interface (UPI) platform — a system that was built and is maintained by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI).

Coinbase and other crypto exchanges in the country halted the feature in the country.

Seoul recently arrested two South Korean citizens, a 38-year-old cryptocurrency exchange operator (Lee) and a 29-year-old army captain, on charges of espionage related to selling military secrets to Pyongyang.

According to reports, a North Korean operative met Lee through an undisclosed online cryptocurrency forum in 2016 and offered him cryptocurrency in exchange for his assistance with ongoing clandestine operations.

South Korean media also claims that the two communicated through the private messaging app Telegram. While such features are not inherently bad, criminals have consistently used end-to-end message encryption features and other privacy protocols specific to applications like Telegram to coordinate, propagate, and monetize illicit activity.

The Korean National Policy Agency stated that the North Korean operative paid Lee roughly $600,000 and the army captain about $38,800 in cryptos.

2022-05-03 17:31:00 Wikipedia halts cryptocurrency donations after accepting them for 8 years

The Wikimedia Foundation (WMF), the non-profit organization that manages Wikipedia has announced that it has stopped accepting crypto donations.

In an update made by the WMF, the organization said it has “has decided to discontinue direct acceptance of cryptocurrency as a means of donating” and also stated that it shall also close its Bitpay account.

The decision was reached after a protracted debate among some 300 WMF members majority of whom voted to remove crypto donations. 234 members voted to remove crypto donations while 94 members voted to retain the crypto donations.

WMF has accepted crypto donations for about 8 years since it started the service in 2014.

Some of the reasons that informed the WMF’s decision to stop crypto donations include the environmental impact of Bitcoin, the risks of scams, and the fact that the crypto donations that the WMF received were little.

After the encrypted messaging app Telegram previously gave up on its own token, it now supports crypto payments.

According to Protocol, the addition could make crypto payments on messaging platforms more mainstream.

The TON Foundation, which manages the toncoin token, has enabled fee-free payments, sending crypto to other users, using toncoin (TON) in the app. It also has added the ability to buy bitcoin within the app.

Telegram, which has about 550 million users, previously dropped its plan for its own token after a legal challenge from theAUS Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

The TON Foundation said it has enabled the ability to send Toncoin "without transaction fees to any Telegram user", it announced on Twitter.
