The Cuban central bank issued regulations this week for virtual asset service providers, after giving a nod last year to the personal use of cryptocurrencies, a move some experts said could help the Communist-run Caribbean island skirt stiff U.S. sanctions.

The bank authorization, published Tuesday in the government’s official gazette, requires those wishing to use cryptocurrencies to obtain a license.

The bank said it would consider the legality, socioeconomic interest and project characteristics of any request before granting a license, which would be valid initially for one year.

The roll-out of mobile internet three years ago has opened the way for cryptocurrency transactions in Cuba, and enthusiasts on the island are growing in number as the currencies help overcome obstacles created by U.S. sanctions.

Bitstamp, has published a first glimpse of results from its 2022 Global Crypto Pulse Survey. The research was conducted across 23 global markets and sampled more than 23,000 everyday investors as well as 5,500 institutional investors to get a broad cross section of data and insights into virtual currencies.

Highlights of the research include:

- Eighty percent of the larger investor group believe that, within a decade, investments in crypto will surpass traditional investment options, and 75% of everyday investors agreed with that timeline.

- About 54% of retail investors say they would use crypto for online purchases. Broken down by investor class, 67% of retail respondents said crypto is a trustworthy investment, and 70% of institutional investors surveyed agreed.

DOGE is currently up over 30% in the last 24 hours, leading the recovery in the broader cryptocurrency market, as the market capitalization of the space is currently up 5.77% at the time of this writing.

Analysis of Google search data reveals that online searches for ‘Buy Dogecoin’ exploded 392% worldwide on the 25th of April, the same day that it was announced that Elon Musk had bought social media platform, Twitter for $44 billion at $54.20 a share.

Dogecoin, in 2022, has made it into the top 10 by market capitalization for the first time this year over the news. Twitter’s share price ended the trading session up 5.66%, currently trading $51.70 a share.

Fintech platform Stripe has introduced crypto payouts for Connect, a way for businesses to send payouts using cryptocurrencies, starting with Twitter.

With crypto payouts, a select group of creators on Twitter will be able to use cryptocurrency-based rails to receive their earnings, a blog post by Stripe said.

“Twitter already uses Connect to pay creators their earnings from its monetisation products, including Ticketed Spaces and Super Follows. With crypto payouts for Connect, Twitter will make it possible for creators to have their earnings paid out to a cryptocurrency wallet,” it added.

When Surojit Chatterjee walked on stage at a Coinbase Global Inc. conference in Bengaluru, India, on April 7, he had little reason to anticipate the fallout that would shortly ensue. Chatterjee, the company’s chief product officer, told the assembled audience that crypto investors would now be able to use the country’s online retail payments system to transfer funds to its local exchange.

Hours after Chatterjee’s announcement, the central bank-backed entity that runs the system — called United Payments Interface — said it was “not aware” of any crypto exchange using the network. Within three days of the event, Coinbase had halted rupee transfers to its trading app via UPI.

The abrupt reversal left Coinbase customers without any way of funding their accounts with rupees, dealing a blow to its expansion plans in India.
