2022-06-11 20:05:04 National averages on gas have reached $5 gallon, AAA and GasBuddy say — and get ready for the number to keep climbing

There are almost 20 states where gas costs at least $5/gallon, according to AAA.

On Saturday, AAA pegged the national average at $5.00 for a gallon of gasoline. The average price is 19 cents higher than it was a week ago, 60 cents higher than a month ago — and just about two dollars more than the $3.07 average a year ago, AAA’s data showed.

It all adds up to more pain at the pump. For instance, a driver with a 15-gallon tank is going to be shelling out $75. It will take more than $100 to fill up certain pickup trucks, like a Ford F-150, and SUVs like a Jeep Grand Cherokee, a AAA spokesman noted Saturday.

U.S. core consumer price growth is expected to cool a fraction, data later in the global day is set to show. Such an outcome would provide some reassurance to those hoping decades-high inflation had peaked in March and that the April pullback was not a one-off.

This could give the Fed some wiggle room to raise rates less aggressively later in the year as it tries to rein in inflation without tipping the economy into recession.

The highest U.S. inflation in 40 years shows little sign of easing.

The cost of living jumped 1% in May on the back of higher rents, gas and food prices, pushing the rate of U.S. inflation to a 40-year high of 8.6%.

The increase in the consumer price index in May was more than triple the gain in the prior month. Economists polled by The Wall Street Journal had forecast a 0.7% advance.

The increase in inflation over the past year moved up to 8.6% from 8.3%, a new cycle high. The last time inflation rose as rapidly was in 1981.

Rising food and energy prices also add to the costs of doing business for many companies ranging from grocers and restaurants to airlines and fertilizer producers. And they’re passing those costs onto consumers.
