3 Major Market Themes (and Potential Winners) for 2022

It remains vital that market participants stay sharp and keep tabs on major themes that could sway asset prices over this calendar year.

Last year, risk assets didn’t seem to have a care in the world.
Roaring inflation? No worries.
Central banks pulling back stimulus? So what?
Delta and Omicron variants? Life goes on.

1) Stubborn Inflation
US: fastest inflation since 1982
UK: fastest inflation since 2011
Europe: record high inflation!
Potential winner: Gold

2) Fed rate hikes
As things stand, the Fed has indicated that they could hike rates 3 times in 2022.
Potential winner: US Dollar

3) New Covid variant?
We’re entering the third year in this battle against Covid-19. So far, the global economy seems resilient enough to weather the Delta and Omicron variants.
Potential winner: Swiss Franc

Kickstarting the Bitcoin Network: A Look at the Genesis Block and Source Code That Sparked a Financial Revolution

13 years ago today, the anonymous creator of the Bitcoin protocol kickstarted the network by mining the genesis block. Satoshi started the genesis block on Saturday, January 3, 2009, at precisely 1:15 p.m. (EST), and since then more than 700,000 blocks have been mined into existence.

What History Says About 2022 Stock Market Performance During U.S. Midterm Election Cycle

Based on the annual seasonality chart during US midterm election cycle for the past 71 years, S&P 500 (SPX) is expected to experience increasing volatility in a prolonged trading range.

Last year in 2021, S&P 500 (SPX) gained 26.9% on the year, just less than 1% away from all-time high. It is the best performing index that beats Nasdaq Composite (IXIC), Dow Jones (DJI) and Russell 2000 (RUT).

Despite the outstanding performance last year, there are a few important events unfolding in 2022 where I have covered one of them – potential effect of macro environment on S&P 500. Next is the 4-years US election cycle.

Omicron’s New Year’s cocktail: Sorrow, fear, hope for 2022

The mostly muted New Year’s Eve celebrations around the world ushered in another calendar year framed by the global pandemic.

Sorrow for the dead and dying, fear of more infections to come and hopes for an end to the coronavirus pandemic were — again — the bittersweet cocktail with which the world said good riddance to 2021 and ushered in 2022.

New Year’s Eve, which used to be celebrated globally with a free-spirited wildness, felt instead like a case of deja vu, with the fast-spreading omicron variant again filling hospitals.

The Weekly Wrap – Upbeat Omicron News Delivered another Dollar Loss

It was another bearish week for the Greenback, with a pickup in market risk appetite weighing. The Pound and the Loonie were front runners in the week.

For the Greenback, it was a 2nd consecutive week in the red. In the week ending 31st December, the Dollar Spot Index declined by 0.36% to 95.670. In the previous week, the Dollar had fallen by 0.57% to 96.019.

Jobless claims was the key stat in the week, with the markets looking to assess the impact of the Omicron strain on labor market conditions.

There were no major stats to provide the Pound with direction. Market bets of a more hawkish outlook on Bank of England monetary policy delivered support, however.

Unemployment figures from France and inflation figures from Spain were the key stats in the week.

It was a particularly quiet week, with no key stats from Canada to provide direction. The lack of stats left market risk sentiment to influence in the week.

US Markets: Early 2022 Should Continue A Melt-Up Trend

A very late positive shift in the US major indexes may prompt a powerful upward price trend in early 2022. I expect that Q4:2021 earnings and revenues will continue to impress traders while the US Dollar strengthens above 95. This combination of a strong US economy with a stronger US Dollar will continue to attract foreign capital investment in US equities in early 2022.

Traders won’t want to miss the potential for a Q1 and Q2 rally phase in the US markets IF the US Fed stays moderately inactive throughout the first half of 2022.

It’s been a rough couple of years for many small businesses—what does the future hold?

2. Business lending ramps up, community banks take the lead
3. It’s the year of the brick-and-mortar

Inflation will be the Biggest Challenge in 2022

Inflation is believed to be the greatest economic challenge next year in the U.S., as the Omicron strain, the rebound in consumer demand, and supply chain issues will prolong into 2022. Prices have increased at the fastest rate in 40 years.

As reported by The Washington Post, inflation is set to be the main challenge next year after consumer prices smashed experts’ predictions in 2021. While the U.S. economy recovered, groceries, rent, and used cars soared to historic highs.

The increase hit consumers hard and dampened purchasing power, and it also put the Federal Reserve in a compromising position as it had estimated much less inflation. Meanwhile, even the White House faced questions from some Democrats who were concerned about the possibility of plans for more federal spending pushing inflation higher.
