2021-12-25 18:04:22 Global Debt Reaches a Record USD 226 Trillion

In 2020, we observed the largest one-year debt surge since World War II, with global debt rising to USD 226trn as the world was hit by a global health crisis and a deep recession. Debt was already elevated going into the crisis, but now governments must navigate a world of record-high public and private debt levels, new virus mutations, and rising inflation.

Global debt rose by 28 percentage points to 256% of GDP, in 2020, according to the latest update of the IMF’s Global Debt Database.

Debt increases are particularly striking in advanced economies, where public debt rose from around 70% of GDP, in 2007, to 124% of GDP, in 2020. Private debt, on the other hand, rose at a more moderate pace from 164% to 178% of GDP, in the same period.

Consumer spending rose slowly in November as shoppers began the holiday season wrestling with inflation fears and concerns over surges in Covid-19.

U.S. consumer spending rose 0.6%, the Commerce Department said Thursday. That compares with a 1.4% rise in October.

Retailers are more agile than they were two years ago, and have evolved their processes to deal with abrupt changes in consumer behavior. “The larger companies with big profit pools are best suited to react.”

U.S. stock indexes headed for a third straight gain and the S&P 500 index was aiming for trade in record-close territory on Thursday, ahead of the long Christmas holiday weekend, amid optimism that global economies won’t be derailed by the omicron variant of COVID.

Investors were also absorbing a fresh batch of U.S. data including inflation, durable goods orders and jobless benefit claims published Thursday.

On Wednesday, major indexes scored gains. For the week through Wednesday, the Dow was up 1.1%, the S&P 500 had gained 1.6%, and the Nasdaq advanced 2.3%.
