Coinbase is partnering with DeFi firm Violet to launch Mauve, a new decentralized exchange platform that combines features of both DeFi and traditional finance. The platform aims to restore trust in crypto following the high-profile collapse of FTX last year by allowing users to trade without surrendering custody of their assets. Mauve will borrow architecture from DeFi for self-custody while offering compliance guarantees and disclosure from TradFi to reduce counterparty risk. Coinbase has launched a new product called Wallet as a Service (WaaS) to make it easier for developers to onboard into web3. WaaS is a set of wallet infrastructure APIs that enable companies to create and deploy customizable on-chain wallets to their users. This allows companies to natively integrate wallets directly into their apps, which eliminates the need for users to be redirected to separate applications to connect their wallets. Coinbase's VP of Engineering, Will Robinson, said that the current onboarding flow is "sort of backwards" for most people, and WaaS aims to change that.

Crypto lender Voyager Digital has been granted approval by a U.S. bankruptcy judge to sell its assets to Binance.US, in a deal worth $1.3 billion. As part of the acquisition, Binance.US has agreed to pay $20 million in cash to Voyager and to take on crypto assets deposited by its customers. The customers' crypto assets account for the bulk of the deal's valuation.

Grayscale went to court last year after the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) did not allow the company to convert its flagship Bitcoin Trust (GBTC) to an exchange-traded fund (ETF). In oral arguments in front of the DC Circuit Court of Appeals judges on Tuesday, the SEC was grilled on why it had approved bitcoin futures ETPs but not Grayscale's proposed spot offering. This line of questioning could signal a ruling in favor of Grayscale, according to an analyst. GBTC has $14 billion in assets and has traded at a discount of over 40% in recent weeks.

Vitalik Buterin, the world’s youngest crypto billionaire, has donated $15 million in cryptocurrency to UC San Diego to boost research into airborne disease. The university plans to launch a new Meta-Institute for Airborne Disease in a Changing Climate to investigate aerosolized pathogens and their health impacts. The interdisciplinary initiative will be housed at the university’s School of Biological Sciences and led by researchers from Scripps Institution of Oceanography and the School of Physical Sciences. The donation is one of the largest cryptocurrency gifts made to an American university.
