Complete guide to the TON ecosystem: from Toncoin to DeFi protocols and mini-apps

TON came out of a Telegram team project and stayed closer to the messenger than any other chain: a TON wallet opens inside the app, and sending Toncoin looks like sending a message. That closeness is where most questions start — what TON actually is, and how Toncoin differs from tokens that only live on exchanges.

The short version: the TON blockchain settles a transfer in seconds for a few cents in fees. It carries Telegram mini apps, collectible gifts, NFTs and DeFi protocols, while Toncoin both pays those fees and earns staking rewards.

This section is built as a route rather than a reference. First the TON wallet: where it lives, how the built-in one differs from a standalone app, and what happens to your coins if you lose access to Telegram. Then buying and holding Toncoin without unnecessary intermediaries. Then the part people actually come for — staking, airdrops and an honest look at TON crypto projects that promise yield and do not always deliver.

We also separate Toncoin from the tokens issued inside the network: the first pays network fees and earns staking rewards, the rest live by the rules of their own projects and disappear with them. That distinction explains most of the money lost on TON crypto, and it is where any yield conversation should start.

Guides here are updated as wallets and network fees change.
