2023-01-03 11:08:02 OpenSea witnesses sale of 1.3 M Polygon NFTs in Dec 2022

OpenSea recently announced that the platform sold over 1.3 million Polygon NFTs in December 2022. The transactions amounted to over 15.3 million dollars from 116,000 active traders.Although the numbers were great for Polygon NFTs, in general, OpenSea lost 23% dominance during the year.

Thus was the third-highest month in 2022 (based on NFTs sold for every active trader.) It amounted to 11.24 NFTs for every active trader, while December was the yearly lowest average volume/NFTs sold (11.8 dollars vs. 482 dollars in January 2022.) At the same time, it was 133 dollars for every active trader. The platform went from 50% market share to 33% within the past 12 months. OpenSea accounted for 20% of all ETH gas usage, which dropped to 9% by the end.

NFT creators Ryder Ripps and his business partner Jeremy Cahen have filed a countersuit against Yuga Labs and recently requested the court to declare that Bored Ape Yacht Club images are not entitled to copyright protection.

Yuga Labs claims that Ripp and Cahen were selling copycat NFTs to mislead consumers but the defendants insist that BAYC NFTs are unique and cannot be copied. In addition, they claim that Yuga Labs doesn’t have any copyright over the NFT images associated with BAYC based on its Terms and Conditions. The T&C states that BAYC NFT holders will retain all the property rights in their NFTs.

Gumi, a Japanese mobile gaming company, has partnered with Square Enix and SBI Holdings to build new business opportunities around the metaverse. The deal, which also includes the issuance of new stock valued at $52.7 million dollars, will allow the company to acquire financial and content creation experience.

More and more gaming companies are looking to include metaverse elements in their games. Gumi, a Japanese gaming company focused on mobile entertainment, has announced a capital and business alliance with Square Enix, another Japan-based game developer, and SBI Holdings, one of the biggest financial service companies in Japan. Square Enix will have a marginal stake of 3.01%, according to regulatory filings.

Researchers have unearthed a new phishing campaign involving North Korea-linked hackers targeting NFT users purchasing tokens on platforms such as OpenSea, X2Y2, and Rarible.

Users would first purchase legitimate-looking NFTs on these websites, and these NFTs would then direct the buyer to fraudulent NFT-related websites to complete the minting process. This reportedly involved duping users into carrying out authorizing activities such as sending their Seaport signature, a type of digital signature used to verify NFT contracts made on OpenSea.

Reddit's collectible avatars initiative, which was launched in partnership with Polygon, has been a success. To date, over 5 million NFT collectibles have been minted, which has been a bright spot in an otherwise difficult times.
