2021-06-15 23:21:25 No Checks or Balances for Blockstream

Again, this is not conspiracy - we're going to stick to the raw facts here.

What we know is that Blockstream does develop ideas & protocol changes for Bitcoin. You can argue that "other developers" can contribute to Bitcoin or whatever, but they are responsible for the last two major protocol changes on Bitcoin.

This channel isn't saying that its unacceptable for Blockstream to exist - or to even be a for-profit company.

What this channel is saying is that its not okay for this company to possess members / employees that also have the ability to push changes into the source of Bitcoin (i.e., Luke Dash, Gregory Maxwell, Peter Wiulle, Andrew Poelstra, Matt Corallo and many others).

What we essentially have is a situation where they're able to:

A) Make proposals

B) Push those proposals

With no gap in between. That's what happened with Taproot. There was no real community evaluation that took place.

2021-06-15 23:00:00 Mass Patent Filing in Blockchain for Public Good

Very soon, Librehash will begin filing for mass patents.

The purpose of doing so will not be to enforce them against anyone, but rather to stop other entities from grabbing these patents to enforce against others (lot of patent trolling behind the scenes in blockchain).

Excessive Patents & Licenses Degrade Quality of Solutions Significantly

Ever used Adobe Illustrator (or another Adobe program?). If you design, you most likely have. Let's use them as an example since we were just talking about NFTs (which probably involve a lot of folks using Adobe).

If you are a designer, there's a chance you've decided to obtain the new MacBook or iPad that has the new "M1 chip".

This chip is different from the usual Intel & AMD chips that virtually all commercial laptops & desktops have. The difference is in the "instruction set". Intel & AMD use x86 & Apple is now using "ARM"-based chips.

The difference between the two is sort of like the difference between an engine that takes "gasoline" and one that takes "diesel fuel".

Adobe is like a car manufacturer. And you purchasing the MacBook is like moving to a town that has a ton of 'diesel-only' pumps. Problem is that Adobe has only been making gasoline-powered vehicles.

But Apple is the #1 company in the world, so there are likely to be a LOT of Apple (diesel-only) gas stations in the future moving forward. Naturally, you'd expect Adobe (car manufacture) to begin making cars that can take diesel fuel, right?

Wrong.

2021-06-15 22:44:59 Experimental NFT Release in its Proper Capacity on the Blockchain

This channel called out NFTs (in the way they're described and marketed today) as effectively scams.

The purchases that are being made on 'OpenSea', 'Rarible' and anywhere else provides nothing concrete to suggest that a specific NFT has been purchased other than information on the Ethereum block explorer included within the transaction that points to a certain item on the respective websites.

But as we all know, links on the internet change (like...all the time). Also, the images can be replaced at the link or some other alteration can be made.

There's also nothing restricting that same artwork (NFT) from being sold elsewhere, thus there's nothing to tell us that anyone else's is more legitimate than another.

This is a problem because the entire point of leveraging blockchain technology is to provide some level of "guarantee" or 'cryptographic proof' of the purchase.

2021-06-15 00:04:13 Schnorr Gaffed Earlier This Year on a Published Paper

You've heard of "Schnorr's Signatures" before, right? Its an amazing concept & breakthrough in cryptography that earned the scheme's author, Peter Schnorr, well-deserved notoriety in the field of cryptography.

His reputation precedes him & he is widely respected and acknowledged in the field of cryptography.

Schnorr Claimed He Broke RSA Encryption Earlier This Year

This claim by Schnorr was so profound in its implications, that many of his colleagues questioned whether the paper (pre-print) was actually authored by Schnorr (vs. imposter) when it first began circulating around the internet.

Such a claim drew attention from virtually any and everyone that ever cared (even a tiny bit) about cryptography because 'destroying' the RSA cryptosystem would imply that Schnorr had not only just shattered one of the world's most reliable, long-standing & popular crypto systems known to man - but that he had also essentially made a Nobel Prize worthy breakthrough in the field of mathematics of such profundity that we'd need to re-think many of our core fundamental assumptions about factor difficulty.

Schnorr's Peers in Cryptography Largely Dismissed His Claims as Unsubstantiated

Imagine asking a girl out to prom. In front of your entire school. And all of your friends are there filming. The girl comes out and you surprise her with your flowers and a card saying, "Will you go to prom with me?"

And she says..."No."

That's sort of the equivalent of what happened to Schnorr's in this situation (among his colleagues & peers that assessed the paper).

2021-06-14 23:54:14 Breakdown of This Will be in Another Channel

What that comment addresses dives fairly deep into the cryptography of Bitcoin.

Not everybody is familiar (or necessarily interested) in diggnig this far down into things, so will refrain from digging further into this here within the main channel.

However, another Telegram channel under the 'librehash' flagship is called "@librechain".

If you're interested to get to the crux of what was published (and curious about why Gregory Maxwell felt the need to publicly censor what was written without further explanation), then join @librechain and an explanation will be provided in there today.

Issue isn't about Being Smart

If you're not familiar with these concepts, don't sweat it. This doesn't mean that Bitcoin is "too complex" or that its "over your head".

Cryptography is hard for everyone, including cryptographers (even the well-known ones).

This is an excerpt from what I wrote as a comment for BIP340; there's zero misinformation here (at least coming from my end of things).

Here's a link to the comment: https://github.com/bitcoin/bips/wiki/Comments:BIP-0340/930bacddcd1c1494eefed084d2755e33366232a2#major-request-urgent-this-bip-should-be-canned
